3 Fashion and Style-Related Resolutions for 2012

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

Happy New Year, collegiettes™! To start 2012 off right, I’ve come up with three fashion and style-related resolutions for you to follow this year. Check them out!

1. Organize your wardrobe!
Having a clutter-free closet not only makes getting dressed in the mornings easier and less stressful, but it looks good too.

You should start by getting rid of clothes you have not worn in a year: those that do not fit, outdated trends, everything that you don’t need, and then decide how you are going to organize your closet. For example: store your most-used items in plain sight and the less-used items below and the least-used items up high.

Once you have organized your closet, keep it that way! Fold your clothes neatly and put them back in their place, hang your clothes back up, and put your shoes back in order. This may be the most difficult part but if you take the time everyday to maintain it, your closet should be organized.

2. Discover your signature style
Why don’t you to try to develop your own signature style this year by creating a wardrobe that is uniquely yours? If someone were to look at an outfit you’d wear on a typical day, would they immediately recognize it as an outfit that is “very you?”

To find your signature style start with adjectives to describe your style like “sophisticated, timeless, put-together” or “fun, eclectic” and look into your closet to see if your clothes fit your signature style. If they do, keep them. If they don’t, there is no point in keeping something that is not “you!”

Signature colors can also be another tool to help you define your signature style. Think about which colors make you feel good when you wear them. Find handbags, scarves, and shoes in those colors and mix them into your current wardrobe so you can wear them on a regular basis. You don’t have to do this every day, but often so they can make your look scream “you.”

3. Flatter your figure
Study your figure and dress to suit. Try on lots of different styles to find out what works for your body type. There is no point in wearing something just because it is “in-style.”  Find what suits you best and work it!
