5 Amateur Attempts at Professional Nail Art

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

What do you do when College Park is expecting Hurricane Joaquin? Spend your weekend in the dorm having a nail painting session, of course!

Along with my friends, Valerie, Nina, Sasha, and Ren, I decided to try my hand at intricate nail art.

Each of us went on Pinterest, chose a professional nail design, and then recreated it on our own nails/toes using the mediocre beauty supplies we had lying around. As you’ll see, we discovered that nail art is a lot harder than it looks. However, we got a good time and some amusing pictures out of it.

Let’s start with Valerie, a sophomore physics major. Stereotypically, the physics major opted to try galaxy nails on her toes. She used a variety of colors, blending them using cotton swabs and using a makeshift detail applicator for stars. Here’s how it went.

Nina:

Nina’s not the biggest fan of nail art;  she prefers subtle colors and simple designs. Here’s the closest thing she found.

Sasha:

After a lengthy search through Pinterest, Sasha found the perfect design to try. However, being an avid fan of purple, she decided to make a few color substitutions.

Ren:

Disclaimer: Ren is an art major and her skills put the rest of the group’s nail art to shame. She made autumn themed nails consisting of glitter and leaves. Even though she used different colors, you can tell that she killed it because the leaves actually look like leaves.

Personally, I don’t think this went too badly. Although, I definitely gained respect for the skills of professional nail artists.

Sure most of our nails didn’t look like the pictures, but we had a blast trying. This is definitely a recommended activity for a night in with girlfriends. If you want to try any of the nail art we did, the links are posted below the pictures!
