4 Reasons Why Galentine’s Day is Better than Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

For many ladies, Valentine’s Day is one of those special days to show love to our significant other. But for the rest of us single gals, it is our time to celebrate the single life, and not harp on the grievances of being alone. So let’s honor our sisterhood on Feb.  13, which is officially Galentine’s Day, as an opportunity for us to enjoy each other’s company without the pressures of Feb. 14. As we prepare for the big day, here are four reasons why it is so much better to be with your girls on February 13!

Save Your Money and Avoid Breaking the Bank

Although Valentine’s Day can be super adorable, it comes with a lot of responsibility, usually in the gift department. Most people want to get the perfect gift to show their love, which could require dropping a hefty amount of money. But with Galentine’s Day, it’s about spending time with your girlfriends and not about gifts. Plus, with school struggles, sleep deprivation and a starving bank account, it is even more acceptable to nix the gifts and focus on quality time with friends.

Less Room for Disappointment

It’s no secret that there’s a lot of pressure to make Valentine’s Day ideal for a significant other, only leaving room for high expectations and chances of disappointment. All of those worries go out the window on Galentine’s Day because it’s not about setting the mood and recreating a scene out of The Notebook. Instead, good company and conversation are simple components to creating a great night.

Perfect Time to Binge Watch Your Favorite Shows

With crazy day-to-day schedules, it can be hard to schedule time for TV. Of course we all squeeze in an hour or two to watch our latest TV obsessions when we should actually be studying, but avoid the guilt of binge watching and use it as an excuse on Feb. 13. Galentine’s Day gives you a reason to treat yourself and catch up on all the episodes you’ve missed. And before the night begins, you need to have yummy food to snack on during those insane TV moments, which is undoubtedly a perfect situation.

Chill vs Cute

Many couples may go out to dinner on Feb. 14, stepping out in nice outfits looking rather polished, but when it’s just your girls, who cares what the other person is wearing? Rather than getting cute for one night, you can lounge in comfortable clothes and chill out,  no heels or tight dresses. Opt for a remote, good television and your favorite people all around us.

So don’t dread the impending day of lovers on Feb. 14 because us single girls already have our own day to look forward to this month, and we shall make it a great time!
