13 Things I Wish I Knew My Freshman Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lehigh chapter.

1. The freshman fifteen is real and completely unforgiving…I didn’t believe everyone who warned me, and I definitely should have. Of course I don’t advocate skipping Chicken Finger Friday, but maybe head over to the gym for a quick workout once in awhile

2. Just because you live on an all-girls hall, don’t assume boys won’t be in the hallways…do you really want the girl from three doors downs boyfriend to see you in your bra? Probably not.

3. The library isn’t the best environment for everyone to study. My freshman year I used to HATE going to the library, and found I barely got any work done while there. Instead I would find empty classrooms to study in, so just do what feels right to you.

4. Don’t spend a lot of money on cute shoes to wear out. The floors at parties are absolutely disgusting and your totally cute new shoes will get ruined.

5. Google Docs will literally become your life. If you haven’t used Google Docs before, start to get acquainted because I promise you will use it!

6. Dropping a class doesn’t mean you’re dumb, or a failure, or not good enough. It happens to a ton of people, myself included, so if you do end up dropping a class, don’t let it get you down!

7. The same goes with switching your major! College is really about figuring out what you love, and you might find what you loved in high school really isn’t what you want to do with your life. Switching my major was one of the best decisions I’ve made so far in college!

8. Parties get really hot…like ridiculously, omg I’ve literally never sweat so much in my life hot.

9. Just because you don’t make instant best friends don’t assume you chose the wrong school…it takes time and effort to make best friends!

10. Buying all your books at the bookstore is a complete waste of money. I remember spending an insane amount first semester on books I opened maybe once. Check with your professors, sometimes the textbook isn’t necessary and other times professors are fine with you purchasing an earlier edition of the book which really cuts down the price!

11. Upper-class boys may seem really nice, but unfortunately a lot of times it’s not because they want to be your friend…

12. And keep in mind, just because you hook up with a boy don’t automatically assume he wants to date you

13. Actually make it a point to go to your professors’ office hours. It’s so easy to get caught up in the business of the semester until all of a sudden it’s finals week and you’re not even sure if your professor knows your name!
