Redefining Feminism

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

“I have realized that fighting for women’s rights has become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop.” Emma Watson said at the U.N. Conference in NYC on September 20. She is correct when making a general summation on how most people feel about feminism. But our generation has the opportunity to change this way of thinking. Feminism is not just about women and women’s rights. Feminism by definition is the social, economic, and political equality of the sexes.

Feminism generally holds the misconception that it is exclusively for bra-burning, hairy-legged, man-hating women. Although there are feminists like this, most are normal men and women looking for equality in society among the genders. Gender equality impacts so much of our lives. From equal pay and birth control to how a person is raised based on their gender. Gender equality is very important.

Some people don’t openly come out as feminists because of the social stipulations and stereotypes that come along with it. If a woman is open about being a feminist, some men and even some women would be turned off by that, because of what society has taught us of feminists. And a man that claims to be a feminist?  Very rare. But, these facts and feeling can be easily changed by the new generation.

If our society became more knowledgeable about feminism and how it would help both genders, it is probable that we would live in a more equal world. Although it isn’t easy, if not us, who? If not now, when? Our generation is the generation to stop gender equality. A women will be able apply for a job, work hard, and expect the same pay as her male counterpart. A man should feel secure enough to express his feelings of self-doubt without being looked down upon. Any person should be able to walk into a situation without the fear of being judged on their gender.

When it comes down to it, feminism has a very misleading name. Feminism is not just about females. It is about both sexes having equal rights. Emma Watson states, “We are struggling for a united word but the good news is we have a uniting movement.” Gender equality is what this movement is about. And it is up to this generation to make it happen.
