Powerful Women of Lasell: Dr. Dana Janbek

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

In celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day (on Tuesday March 8th), Her Campus Lasell is shining the spotlight on Dr. Dana Janbek, one very accomplished member of our faculty Dr. Janbek incorporates her personal experiences with global and regional trends in Communication in the classroom, exploring subject material that students can’t get from a textbook.

Her Campus correspondent Tyler Hurst asked Dr. Janbek a short questionnaire:

1. Which female figure from the past/present has inspired you?

There are so many to choose from but I would say Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, a Palestinian leader and activist, whom I had the pleasure of meeting while traveling in the summer of 2008 (pictured).

2. Before you came to Lasell, what was your field of work?

I worked at the Embassy of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Washington, DC, and at World Communities of Louisville, an umbrella organization for immigrants and refugees, in Louisville, KY.

3. Are you involved on campus with anything outside of teaching in the classroom?

I serve on faculty committees and help with the Communication Department’s activities including COMDay, the Washington DC trip, and the Graduate Communication Series. This semester I am also organizing a Refugee Symposium.

4. What is one accomplishment that you are very proud of?

     My research with Syrian refugees.

5. Any advice to offer to students here at Lasell?

Don’t confuse “working” with “working hard.” Working is showing up to work and putting in your 40 hours. Working hard is going way above and beyond that. If you want to be successful, plan on working hard.

6. Are there any upcoming events on campus that you would like to promote?

Absolutely! The Refugee Symposium on Wednesday March 23rd which I organized with a number of faculty members. Almost 20 refugees and experts from different domains will be speaking on the social, legal, political, and economic aspects of the refugee experience. Here is the program: http://www.lasell.edu/discover-lasell/refugee-symposium.html
