Keanu Movie Review

From the creators and stars of Key and Peele comes their first feature film, Keanu. A story of two close friends/cousins who would do anything to get back their cat, Keanu, from a dangerous drug gang in Los Angeles. Besides featuring the most adorable and scene-stealing cat possibly ever put on screen, Key and Peele have managed to make this film a solid comedy but not without some flaws here and there. So let’s go over the good and bad.

Positives:

Key and Peele – These two comedians know how to ad-lib and make the most out of such a simple premise. Every ounce of comedic timing and energy displayed by these two guys were fun to watch and their chemistry/dynamic still works for this movie.

Keanu the Cat – However the actions, movement or whatever was done to make this cat do the things it did in this movie was impressive. Everything about and featuring Keanu worked.

Method Man and Will Forte – These two supporting roles were both good in different ways. Method Man was great playing a more sinister, villainous presence while Will Forte plays a goofy stoner to perfection.

Jokes landed well for the most part – Every scene that involved the pure insane energy from the two leads was good. Even for the material that was weaker, they made it work somehow.

Negatives:

Drags in the second act – This film picks up very quick and was hilarious for the first act, but when the second act came around, specifically one sequence, it dragged on and wasn’t that funny for about ten minutes. It was more awkward than anything else.

Rushed ending – The movie ended rather abruptly and didn’t leave much room for development or exposition. It felt like it was being made up as it went along, which shows lazy and uninspired screenwriting.

Final Grade : B-
