Why Crushes are the Absolute Worst

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

As a girl who currently has one, let me just point out the obvious that crushes are one of the worst things to have. It should be considered a form of cruel self-torture and makes anyone who has one question why feelings are even a thing. Obviously, this list could be 1,000+ reasons long but I’ve narrowed it down to some of the top reasons why crushes are the absolute worst.

1. It consumes most of your time

Seriously, do you know how much homework I could have gotten done instead of stalking their social media accounts for 2+ hours? Don’t lie, you’ve done it too. Also day dreaming about you two doing cute things together and then all of a sudden you realize half the lecture is over and you have no clue what the teacher is talking about? Yup, guilty of that too!

2. Your friends constantly bring it up/make it a point to embarrass you in front of them

We all know that urge to slowly slide down in our chair and try to disappear into the void when we hear our friends go, “Your crush just walked in! You should go talk to them!” or “OMG *insert crush’s name here* we were just talking about you!”. We know your intentions are good, but sometimes it can be a little bit too much.

3. Or better yet you manage to embarrass yourself in front of them by yourself

Mentally cringing as you struggle to put together a full sentence that makes sense when talking to your crush. Why couldn’t it have gone as smooth as it did when you were practicing what you were going to say in the mirror?

4. Half the time they don’t know you exist

Admiring from afar is great until one day you realize how lonely you are and how much you just really want to cuddle with that one person. Worst. Feeling. Ever!

5. Or they’re one of your friends and a) the feeling isn’t mutual or b) you don’t want to risk the relationship you two have

This is one of the worst possible situations. You basically have to suffer in silence with this one until you finally get over it (and probably have a crush on someone else and start the whole process over). I’m so sorry.

6. Overthinking everything they say/do to try to find a hidden meanings

Well they smiled at me today when I walked past them on the way to class so obviously I have a great chance with them. Again, we’re all guilty of it. If you say otherwise you’re lying.

7. Sometimes you can’t even explain why you’re into them

I know they’re not normally my type, but for some reason they have stolen my heart without realizing it and I don’t know how to get it back.

8. You see other couples on campus being cute and all you can think about is doing the same cute things with them

Holding their hand and walking to class together. Quick pecks when you pass them on the way to your next class. Having lunch together and telling each other about your days. Has your heart melted yet? Do I hate myself for putting those thoughts in my head again too? Yep!

9. It creeps into your dreams and suddenly you’re dreaming about doing cute things with them too

Why have it stop with day dreaming when it can consume your entire life and soul instead? And it’s even better when your friends start coming up to you saying “I had a dream you and *insert crush’s name here* were dating!” WHY CAN’T IT BE A REALITY ALREADY!?

10. That moment when reality hits aka they have a boyfriend/girlfriend already or you find out they’re not interested

At least friends are there to help you pick up the pieces. They’re the true MVPs.

So to all of you that relate far too much to this suffering, we’re in the same horrible boat. I’m so sorry. If you need me I’ll be in the corner crying with my box of tissues.
