Why Sleeping Around Doesn’t Mean What it Used to

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

How many times have you heard the term “You can’t have your cake and eat it too”? Well, why not? If the cake is tasty and I want cake, then I should eat that cake! In fact, I should be able to try every flavor on any given day of the week. When it comes to dating this idea is often applied to the idea of seeing multiple people at once. There is a stigma that you should date one guy at a time rather than playing the field and seeing what your options are. When you date more than one person, it is often times seen as risque and even promiscuous. The truth is, there is nothing wrong with it…at all. Seeing more than one person at a time gives you a better opportunity at finding someone you actually want to be with. Even if you are not ready for a relationship, you can still have a lot of fun getting to know different people.

It’s completely okay to not know what you are looking for in a partner. For most, finding a partner is like this; you see someone cute, you approach said cutie, you ask the cutie for their number, you and this cutie date. It’s new and exciting and gives you all the feels but, what happens if you see another person that you find interesting? The perks of casual dating mean you and your partner(s) are involved in a mature, consensual open relationship. Neither of you are not tied to one specific person and it allows you to exercise your freedom. It allows you to weigh the pros and cons of each individual- not only their personality but, also in bed. Let’s be honest, sex is important and dating multiple people also increases the odds of finding someone you are sexually compatible with. And even if you don’t find sexual and personal compatibility in one person, you get the chance to build your dream guy in more than one person. Let’s say one partner has an awesome personality but, isn’t into romantic gestures; don’t sweat it! You’re other partner loves romantic gestures and he’s good in bed. It’s a win-win, ladies!

Casual dating can also makes you a bit more attractive. Having multiple people in your roster can create a busy schedule creating the illusion that you are playing hard to get- and what guy doesn’t love the thrill of the chase?  You also never really lose that “newness” of the relationship. Not seeing someone you’re dating all the time creates a desire to see one another and when you do, it’s like a breath of fresh air. You also can’t keep your hands off of one another! Oh yeah, your sex appeal is through the roof, hun. There’s something so powerful and sexy about a woman who takes her sex/dating life into her own hands and wields like a boss ready to conquer the dating world.

Women are often scrutinized for dating around and it brings on major issues such as slut-shaming even from friends and family- which is absolutely unacceptable. It seems that there is some unspoken rule that you have to stick to seeing one person because it is unbecoming to do otherwise. These types of restraints cause a tremendous amount of stress on young women to saddle up with the first guy that approaches them. This can lead to unhappiness in relationships. Instead, women should claim their sexuality and their womanhood and shout about it from the rooftops! It’s 2017, you can have multiple partners without having any amount of guilt or shame. So, don’t be in a rush to settle down because it’s not always “quantity over quality” sometimes it’s “the more, the merrier” and there is no shame in that.
