What it was like to live in London for a year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

It’s a funny story really. During my elementary through middle school years I moved from Hawaii to Pittsburgh, then to London, then back to Pittsburgh. The family moved to London because my dad was offered a job at the prestigious bank, Barclays. I was taken out of my safe and familiar school district and thrown into a frenzy of competitive college preparatory schools. I said good-bye to the upper-middle class suburbia that I was used to and was introduced to the eye opening, diversity of a major metropolitan.

First, I had so much freedom even as a thirteen year old.

Public transit was excellent. I preferred the double decker buses over The Tube, aka the subway.

The food was phenomenal. I could find food from every country around the world.

Korean Bibimbap and Spicy Tofu Soup

Instead of being in sixth grade, I was considered to be in year 7 because the British school system doesn’t have kindergarten.

This was my house. I’m pretty sure it was built in the 1800s.

During gym we’d play a game called netball, which was basically like team handball and basketball combined.

Yes, we did have houses at school like in Harry Potter, since I went to an all girls school there was a lot of drama.

I miss it all the time and would totally love to go back.
