Trendy Nails that aren’t Fails!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kean chapter.

One of the most inexpensive ways to stay fashionable and always in style is with your nails, girls!  Don’t be afraid to get creative and show the world what you’ve got.  The best thing to do when feeling like you’re ready for a challenge, is go for something that you have never done before.  There are a couple of really great nail trends that have been pretty popular lately that I think you should try out!

The first trend is color blocking your nails.  There are a couple of different ways to try and do this, so get interesting with it.  One way is to paint your nails two or even three different colors.  Chose for instance a darker, navy color like Essie’s Bobbing for Baubles, and then a dark turquoise, maybe Essie’s, School of Hard Rocks.  These two colors are gorgeous.  They are pigmented and opaque after the second coat!

With the colors proceed to paint all but your ring finger with the Bobbing for Baubles color.  After this is done, paint your ring finger School of Hard Rocks.  I find that it is always more interesting to paint the darker color on most of the nails and then the lighter color on your ring finger.  The lighter polish is your pop of color and the focal point for your manicure.  Rock a little glitter on top of the accent nail or leave it alone.  This is a great way to experience one of the many versions of color blocking.

Try it another way.  This method of color blocking is a little more advanced than the previous method, but still not too difficult.  Choose three colors this time.  Take for instance Essie’s French Affair, Nice is Nice and Turquoise and Caicos.  The first a muted bubble gum pink, the second a gorgeous lavender and the third a tropical trip to the greenish-blue ocean.  Whether you chose to use this technique on all the nails or just one accent nail (which I would suggest), it’s a great approach to color blocking.

First, paint the nail whatever color you want the base to be.  Second, chose your second layered color and start about a third of the way up your nail from the base of your nail bed so that the first color is still showing and do two coats.  After this is done, take the third color and then paint over the second color while leaving some of the second color to show.  It is as easy as that!  On one nail you have three colors and a color blocking, trendy manicure.

Another cool trend with nails this season and even stemming from the summers nail trends would be designs on your nails.  Try creating something interesting.  Try using the end of a bobby pin and putting some cute polka dots on your nails.  Adding a little personality to your nails will make you a little happier.  Accomplishing a new design is super awesome!

Too add another level of difficulty without getting too intense, try a tribal pattern on your nails.  This doesn’t require much.  With a fine tip (a pencil, the bobby pin, a brush) anything you can find, just draw lines, zigzags and polka dots.  This design looks much better on one accent nail.  This also looks great when you use two contrasting colors.  Take for instance a base coat of OPI’s, Green-wich Village, and the tribal patterns with China Glaze’s, Electric Pineapple.  So chic!

Give these nail designs a try this season. I’m sure that you’ll absolutely love them!  Good luck with your designs and happy nail-trending!
