How to Survive an Underaged Spring Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Spring break: a time to kick back and relax with your friends without thinking of your next assignment or exam; a time to enjoy basking in the hot sun with some beers or cocktails…well, if you’re 21.

It’s upsetting to know that as a 20-year-old you can’t enter a bar, club, or casino because of your one-year age difference. It’s also disappointing when you come to the realization that all of your friends are 21 and can enjoy the luxury of drinking or the simple activity of socializing at a bar. Hmmm…What to do…what to do…

Here are some things you can do without the requirement of being that “lucky” age:

At the beach, it is clearly a must to lie outside, get sun and maybe even read that book you’ve been meaning to get to. Any aged girl can easily fulfill these tasks. Remember that spring break is not only a time without schoolwork; it’s a time to relax and to enjoy the weather change! So what can you do on a long day or night at the beach?

–   Go jet skiing
–   Walk on the boardwalk or by street shops
–   Have a bonfire with friends
–   Take photos

If you aren’t quite in the relaxed mood, go for a nice walk on the beach. Spa days are also pleasant activities in order to get relaxed. Get a facial or massage, that way when you return to school, you can be completely rejuvenated for the rest of the semester. A manicure and pedicure can even be that “go to” activity when you are bored or want to take a break from the beach.

Not at the beach? If you go home for break, don’t sulk in your room wishing you were at Panama City or Miami— get out of the house and be active!

Go to a nearby city or town for a day trip to shop or eat at an awesome restaurant you have been dying to visit. If you live close
to D.C., go to Georgetown to window shop, sit by the water and eat some fresh food. It’s a perfect excuse to get out of your house and get away from your parents and will be a trip that will make you excited to plan the next one.

Or what about hiking? Here at JMU, being near mountains and not being able to hike because of work or school is painful. Take advantage of your time off and grab a friend or two. Hiking can be good and fulfilling exercise once you reach the top and admire the scenery below.

Do some research. See what’s near you that can be a cheap and fun activity to do. Do something you’ve wanted to accomplish and don’t let your underage friends be disappointed that their spring break is boring.  Your vacation doesn’t need to be terrible because no one in your group is 21 or at the beach! Simply plan ahead and you’ll find some pretty exciting things to do!
