Amanda is a freshman SMAD and Computer Science double major with a passion and knack for photography!  Check out my interview with her below:

How’d you get into photography?

I got into photography my junior year of high school. I signed up for a photography class because I always had an interest in it, but never really the time to pursue it. The first project my teacher gave to me was inspired by an artist named Andy Goldsworthy who manipulated nature and then photographed it. After the project I became so engrossed in photography because I liked the idea of taking something in the world and making it my own. A lot of the time I feel people don’t recognize that photography is an art because it seems like you are just snapping a button, but that’s not the case. Photography is about making others capable of seeing the world in the way you see it.

What’s your favorite part of what you do?

My favorite part about photography is that I am able to share my perspective through it. I’m a very observant person and tend to see things that a lot of people don’t see, possibly because they are masked by monotony. I like that I am able to take something and make people think about it. I am able to freeze a moment in time forever, and know that it is completely one hundred percent unique and will never happen again in the same exact way.

What types of photography do you do?

I do all different kinds of photography including, portraiture, self-portraiture, photojournalism, and fine art photography. There is not one type of photography that I tend to solely gravitate towards. I take pictures of everything and anything. I recently got very into iPhoneography. People tend to get mixed up in thinking that to take good pictures you need a fancy camera, but that’s definitely not the case. The best camera you have is the one you have on you.

This is one of her iPhone pictures that recently won best in show at a gallery in Vermont!

How can people see your work?

People can see my work on my Facebook website www.facebook.com/amandamarieharnerphotography as well as in The Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia! I was recently juried in as an Associate Artist, meaning my work will be hung on the walls and I am able to get a studio if I would like to at some point.

How can people contact you?

I can be contacted by email at amandamarieharner@gmail.com. If anyone is looking to get senior pictures done I would be more than willing to take them! They can email me for rates/scheduling.
