Kanye 2020, a Student’s Guide to Politics: Planned Parenthood and its Enemies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JHU chapter.

Another government shutdown has been looming over Washington these past couple weeks because of split opinions on Planned Parenthood. A group of almost 30 Republicans in the House, ranging from Mick Mulvaney in South Carolina and Ken Buck in Colorado are promising to do whatever necessary in order to stop funding to the organization.

In an open letter explains their reasons, these men state that they are “deeply disturbed at recent reports that Planned Parenthood has been selling the tissue of unborn babies for profit” and as “firm believers in the sanctity of life, beginning at concept, [they] are horrified at these reports.” According to them, the only respectable reaction is to “fully defund Planned Parenthood.”

This is followed by a more aggressive open letter written by Republican senators Ted Cruz and David Vitter who write that “the callous view that those in the abortion industry, like Planned Parenthood, take toward women and unborn children is an affront to natural rights and human decency.

Debunking their reasoning, David Daleiden, the producer of those now infamous videos of Planned Parenthood doctors allegedly selling the tissue of aborted babies, has admitted they were a fraud during an interview on September 30th on CNN

As of now, Planned Parenthood receives about 500 million dollars in government funding but almost none of it goes to abortion services that they provide because of the Hyde Amendment. The Hyde Amendment is a provision that does not allow government funding to be used for abortion unless the mother is in danger or the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest.

The funding does go their other health services that include screening for cervical cancer, contraceptives, sex education programs and providing resources for those in abusive relationships. All of the above services and many more will take a hard hit (read: no longer be offered) if the those whom are against funding Planned Parenthood, get their way.

On Wednesday, September 30th, the federal government passed legislation in to order keep federal agencies running until December 11th, effectively avoiding a government shutdown for now. It passed with a majority democratic vote, as the GOP is still gunning to defund Planned Parenthood even though their main ammunition has supposedly lost all power. It is safe to say that December will be another battle.
