Campus Cutie, Rae Conklin, ’16

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JHU chapter.

1.   Name: Rae “The Bae” Conklin

2.   Major, Year: GECS minoring in Psychology, Junior – basically I’m going to be asking trees how they feel about being neglected their whole lives. Real talk: while being an environmentalist, I’m not sure what that entails career wise. My dream is to become an architect, although I don’t have the brainpower to study the math that comes with engineering. I also want to go into technology development, but if I do that, I’ll have to be the Steve Jobs of eco-friendly innovation as I neither like nor understand physical sciences.

3.   Hometown: Basking Ridge, NJ – think Baskin Robbins but without the ice cream

4.   Affiliated with:  Pi Beta Phi and the Varsity Track and Field team – My dream is to get a wine and silver blue discus in our next sorority spirit wear order.

5.   You can probably find me… Avoiding my homework at all costs. I.e. filling out questionnaires to be featured in Her Campus.

6.   The best thing about Hopkins is… The people. Shoutout to my peeps: Mama Bear, Koala, Eddie-Spaghetti, JJ aka the father of my rebellious daughter Joyzee Strong Amez, my track booties, 705, and everyone else. If I didn’t name you, it’s not that you’re unimportant. You just don’t have a cool enough nickname for me to mention.

7.   Something I’m especially proud of is… I can finish a gallon of milk in one day.

8.   Something most people don’t know about me is… I have a Mickey Mouse birthmark on my right hand. It’s the most interesting thing about me so I should probably start leading with that.

9.   This year, I hope to… Make at least one friend by accidentally misspelling a snap chat name and becoming virtual pic-pen pals with a stranger.

10.  In five years, I will be… a strong independent woman who don’t need a man, but will have a pack of puppies to give me all the love I could possibly want.

11.  Next up for me is… A positive psych midterm that I have all but prepared for. So I’ve got a date with my main squeeze, Brody <3

12.  Relationships Status… Indulging in Indian cuisine

13.  My advice to other Hopkins students is… For those who, like me, are unsure about their future job title (i.e. basically anyone who isn’t pre-med), here’s my piece of advice: look for what you love. I came into Hopkins as an English and Biology double major. Proceeded to drop Bio. Then switched from English to GECS. Missed poetry and fiction, so picked up Writing Sems as my secondary major. Realized there’s no potential for me to graduate in 4 years with all the requirements and decided to give up on the writing and replaced it with a Psychology minor. My path hasn’t been a straight line, but I think I’m heading in the right direction. And that’s all you can do. Our eyesight isn’t good enough to see 10 or 20 years down the road and you might come across a fork that makes you realize your destination is completely different than you intended. If it makes you happy, take the turn.
