In today’s day and age, social media platforms have become the center of everyone’s attention. With these platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and YouTube come a plague of insecurities and body issues. Many teenagers and young adults are constantly comparing and contrasting their own lives to the lives of celebrities and social media moguls. As a culprit to these insecurities, I have learned through trial and error and just plain experience that you simply cannot compare yourself to these strangers. Even as I’m writing this, I realize the love you give to yourself is so much stronger than the ‘love’ you give to someone else on social media.

Simple things can help improve the way you can continue to love yourself. Be open and honest with yourself. If you know something is unreachable or too challenging, tell yourself that it’s okay if you don’t accomplish it. Especially if someone you’re trying to reach is a certain body image, I like to reiterate something that I heard from one of my favorite vloggers Sarah’s Day which is “Listen to Your Body.” Once it’s easier for you to be honest and listen to yourself, forgiving yourself will become easier. Your biggest critic is yourself.

Another tip I have is to pamper yourself. Take one night of the week to either take a bath or read a book. Getting your mind off the stress of work or the stress of life can allow you to re-evaluate yourself and remind yourself of all of the positive things you have going on in your life at the moment. With that, take that time to figure out what you’re passionate about and find a way to take a stab at it. You’ll be grateful that you tried even if you don’t succeed. Another one of my tips is to move on. Don’t hold grudges against yourself or others and you’ll find that living life just get a bit easier.

You need to love the body you’ve been given because it’s one of a kind. Love the family you’ve been given because it’s one of a kind. Love the life you’ve been given because it’s one of a kind. Love your hair, love your friends & love your butt! Lastly, choose to surround yourself by the people that inspire you, not the people that you aspire to be.

I am a sophomore Fashion Merchandising and Management major. Along with contributing to PhilaU's HerCampus, I am a member of Fashion Industries Association and captain of the Philau varsity volleyball team. I love music and I love to dance, & I may have an addiction to Instagram and online shopping. If you don't find me either outside or reading a good book/magazine, you may find me watching TV (too many shows to keep count). My dream is to become a buyer for a large retail company in New York City, & to contribute even a little to a magazine on the side would be the complete package.
