Helpful Websites and Apps for College Students

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JCU chapter.

What did you do before you discovered Easybib.com? Probably actually typed out your citations…which is absolutely absurd! Websites like Easybib are what help me get through obstacles in my classes. I wanted to share a few with other students and hopefully make some of your lives a little easier!

Websites:

Wolfram Alpha

https://www.wolframalpha.com/

This website is incredibly helpful and can compute basically any formula or question you enter. While I have mostly used it for math purposes, it offers help in so many different areas including chemistry, music, history, and astronomy (just to name a few). You cannot go wrong with checking this one out!

Quizlet

https://quizlet.com/

Quizlet is a site that allows you to make flashcards to study. That’s a lot of work thought right – well fortunately you can also access other people’s flashcards that they have made. There are even some teachers who take homework or vocab straight from a commonly used textbook, and you can find those questions and answers on Quizlet.

EasyBib

http://www.easybib.com/

Like I said before – this is my ultimate lifesaver. Although I prefer Easybib, you can basically search Google for any type of citation machine and find one that best suits what you’re looking for. It’s so much more convenient to have a citation machine compute your information because it’s quicker and makes it more difficult to make a mistake.

Talk Typer

https://talktyper.com/

This is really great if you have a long paper and a short amount of time to do it, or if you’re not the best at typing. This website allows you to speak out loud and it will type what you’re saying. Then you can just copy & paste or email it to yourself once you’re finished!

QueText

http://www.quetext.com/

This is a super helpful website that checks for plagiarism. Of course I’m sure no one means to plagiarize, but it does happen! It’s so much better to catch it yourself rather than your teacher though. Just copy and paste your paper and it will let you know if it finds anything that may be plagiarized. Although this is the website I like to use, there are so many plagiarism detectors out there.

Rate My Professors

https://www.ratemyprofessors.com/

If you take nothing else from this article – please use this! This is an amazing resource for scheduling classes. Finding out what to expect from a teacher can have such an influence on what classes you schedule for. If you search your professors beforehand, you eliminate the surprises that may come later.

Apps:

Freedom – Reduce Distractions

This is actually an app used to help limit distractions while studying. You can block certain apps for a specific amount of time. It does require you to set up an account though. For your computer, there are similar alternatives such as KeepMeOut: http://keepmeout.com/en/

P Tracker

This is another great app (especially for women). I just have the free version, and it still does wonders. It allows you to log your period so you always are aware of when it’s coming, when you’re ovulating, etc.

Mint: Money Manager, Budget, & Personal Finance

This is another great resource, and even if you don’t prefer this app, there are a ton of budgeting apps available! It deals with your credit score, cash flow, spending, etc. As a college student, it is so important to keep track of how much you’re spending and saving, and I highly recommend it!

MindBody

This is good for anyone who wants to know more about fitness, wellness, or beauty locations near them. It allows you to schedule for fitness classes such as barre, yoga, and Pilates, and also find places for meditation, massages, or waxing. The home page also shows you any nearby deals. The options are endless!
