As if being a Biochemistry major wasn’t enough, this week’s Campus Celebrity Melissa Butkowski takes time to help her friends with anything that she can. From lab reports to online homework or even helping students who are taking classes she has taken before, Melissa never shies away from helping those in need. She takes every Thursday (or sometimes it can be a different day of the week depending on her schedule) to meet with friends and work together on their lab reports for class or she takes the time to assist those are in need of help.
She told me a story about how she stayed on the phone until midnight with a friend of hers who was in desperate need of her help for the Chemistry assignment. She did not fall asleep until she made sure the person who was in need understood the problem and was confident in themselves about the assignment.
Melissa is always open to listen to her friends problems and always gives advice when needed. She is never shy to tell people that they are not stepping up their game as they should be and she is always there to give an extra boost.
Her hobbies consist of reading, relaxing, volunteering at the Phi Eta Sigma or the National Honor Society of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and, most importantly, cleaning – she said that it helps clear her mind in more ways than one. “It’s the simple things in life that matters to me and sometimes I don’t realize how much I help people. It’s second nature to me.”
