10 Years of Taylor Swift

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ithaca chapter.

It’s been 10 years since Taylor Swift released her first album. A lot has changed over the years and Taylor is almost unrecognizable. We can use the eras around each of her five albums to watch her transformation.

Taylor Swift 2006-2007

Taylor Swift released her first album in 2006. This self-titled album was undoubtedly country. Taylor was known for her signature curls and relatable lyrics. Our Song was the most popular song from the album and was played everywhere. After releasing the album, Taylor opened for big acts like Tim McGraw, Rascal Flats and Faith Hill.

Fearless 2008-2009

Taylor’s second album was fairly similar to the first one. This album introduced us to the iconic You Belong with Me music video and her world tours. Taylor would play her sparkly guitar while wearing sparkly dresses and cowboy boots. Fearless is still the most awarded album in country music history.

Speak Now 2010-2011

Taylor began to drift away from country music with Speak Now. This was Taylor’s fairytale era filled with long dresses and love songs. She debuted her red lips and began straightening her hair around this time. In 2010, Taylor Swift had a role in the movie Valentine’s Day with former boyfriend Taylor Lautner, but acting wasn’t really her thing; Taylor only appeared in two other movies.

Red 2012-2013

At this point, there was no trace of country left in Taylor Swift’s music. Red was a mixture of indie and pop with fun songs like I Knew You Were Trouble and 22. Taylor’s curls vanished, but the red lips stayed.  With straight hair and short shorts, Taylor left behind her sweet girly girl image.

1989 2014-Present

Taylor’s most recent album’s sound was similar to Red, but with an 80s influence. Taylor chopped off her hair and began focusing on her friends and fans rather than her love life. Before releasing 1989, she invited fans to her homes for secret listening sessions. Shake It Off had everyone dancing and the star-filled Bad Blood is arguably her best music video yet. We’re all still jealous of Taylor’s squad and wish we could be part of it.

Until this year, Taylor had released a new album every other year each fall. Hopefully Taylor has enjoyed her time off and drops an album next year!
