Makeup Guilty Pleasures

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

The cosmetic industry can be difficult to keep up with. It’s a blessing to be constantly flooded with new releases from different companies, but also a curse to find the time to try them all. Not to mention the price tag can be a little pricey. So, before I invest in any product, I do my research.

As an avid beauty enthusiast, I thoroughly enjoy trying out new makeup and skincare items, but because this obsession can be expensive, I find it necessary to read reviews and/or find out information about ingredients, especially for people with specific skin concerns. Exploring the beauty community has given me the opportunity to hear about new collections and current popular products, which often prompts me to jump on the bandwagon with genuine curiosity.

Often times, being in college is synonymous with being on a budget. Nightlife is a big trend on campus, and thus, so is getting ready. But, it’s completely possible to fill your makeup bag with a plethora of great essentials that won’t break the bank.

Eyes

This month, I’ve been loving Maybelline’s Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Liner in black. It comes with the brush as well and lasts a long time without drying out. I love its heavy pigmentation and lasting power. To top off the eyes, try Maybelline’s Volum’Express The Rocket Mascara for extra dark, defined and long lashes for any long night out. Before finishing off, conceal those dark circles. Once again, Maybelline has come out with an impressive Instant Age Rewind Eraser for under the eyes. The consistency is thick and impressively covers up any signs of tired eyes.

Foundation

If I splurge on makeup, it’s usually for my face. Specifically, I don’t mind spending more on foundation considering it’s the base for the rest of your makeup. Laura Mercier’s Silk Créme Foundation in Beige Ivory has been a favorite of mine for years. It’s perfect for dry skin and gives a beautiful, dewy finish. I’ve found it to work best on top of Laura Mercier’s Oil Free Foundation Primer for longer wear, which is the perfect solution when going out.

Face Color

After foundation, Benefit’s Hoola Bronzer has been perfect for adding a suntanned glow to my skin. In the winter months, bronzer is my favorite trick for skin that looks fresh and alive, and Hoola’s deep pigmentation and matte finish makes tan skin look entirely natural. To add a bit of color to my cheeks, I recommend Milani blush in Luminoso. Its flawless, shimmery coral color makes it an absolute steal for only $6 at the drugstore.

Whether you’re a minimalist, a classic beauty girl or an experimental addict, these products are sure to make a nice addition to your collection. The beautiful thing is that each can be applied differently and for various makeup looks, so you are free to tailor each product’s use to what suits your liking. Enhance your makeup routine with a few of these February favorites that have inevitably rolled over into March given their excellent quality. Getting ready doesn’t have to be a chore; sometimes, it’s just as fun as going out!
