Letter from the President

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Hi HC Illinois readers!

First of all, let me start by thanking you for continuing to read the work we put out each week. The HC Illinois staff works tirelessly to provide you with engaging, applicable, intelligent, useful and entertaining content that we truly think will benefit you. So thank you for continuing to read and giving us several reasons each week to continue our efforts. We really do appreciate it.

The best way we could think to thank you, though, was not by this written note. Instead, to show our appreciation to you – our dedicated, inspiring readers, we decided to plan an event that would be fun for you! We wanted the event to bring you all the things you love: fashion, health, music, entertainment, beauty and enjoyment.

So the other exec members and I, with the help of our amazing HC girls and an Illini Public Relations Committee, brainstormed and eventually executed the idea for a holiday-themed wellness event that will give you a perfectly-timed mental break before finals start up. The event, “Take a Holiday with Her Campus,” will take place on Wednesday, November 30th from 6-9 pm in Multipurpose Room 7 at the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC).

Our amazing flyer created by HC staffer Kelly Miller.

We will be bringing business, both near and far, to the event to provide you with some amazing services that range from jewelry sales to makeup application to health tips. There will also be no shortage of entertainment as we have planned a Rent-the-Runway fashion show featuring U of I students, performances by The Other Guys, Illini Dance Team and 3-Spot dance team and student dj-ing.

And there’s more! We have several generously donated raffle prizes up for grabs. They range from a free party at Clybourne or Firehaus to Cubs tickets to Kams VIP cards that get you out of line and cover to boutique items! And did I mention that the first 50 guests to arrive receive a FREE swag bag filled with goodies and gift cards? The perks never end.

But the most important part of the whole event is that all proceeds allow us to buy Christmas presents for underprivileged children through the Northwestern Settlement. There is nothing better than helping make the holidays brighter for others, and by simply attending the event you can do just that.

Tickets are $5 if purchased prior to the event from an HC representative or $6 at the door. So it’s small price to pay to bring cheer to these children’s’ lives AND to treat yourself to a fun, stress-free, holiday celebration.

For more information, check out the Facebook event page or feel free to email me directly at emilycleary@hercampus.com.

Again, I thank you for your dedication, passion and for making my job one I look forward to everyday.

I sincerely hope to see many of you at the event on the 30th, not only to help raise money for a deserving cause but because you all owe it to yourselves. Sometimes, especially during the holidays, we forget to take care or ourselves. This is my way of saying that sometimes it’s okay to take a break (especially if it’s only three hours) and reward yourselves for the hard work you do all year round.

So join me in spreading a little holiday cheer and laughter at the “Take a Holiday with Her Campus” event!

Best Wishes & Happy Holidays,

Emily Cleary

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
