Heating It Up in Your Dorm Room: 5 healthy, microwavable snacks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Everyone knows how bland and boring dining hall meals can get. They often leave us hungry and wanting something actually tasty. Making ourselves healthy, easy and delicious snacks can be much easier than you may think. If you don’t have a microwave in your dorm room, there may be some type of communal kitchen in your dorm that has one. If you have neither of those options, then there is always the dining hall’s microwave!

Many simple snacks and small meals can be whipped up very easily with just the push of a microwave button.  To satisfy your appetite, here are five examples of snacks and small meals you can make in a microwave!

Popcorn

Popcorn is so simple and yummy that it can often be forgotten. If you pick a non-buttered and lightly salted option, popcorn can be a light snack to munch on when staying up late to study or even to satisfy those stomach grumbles your unsatisfying dining hall dinner left you with.

Hot Pockets

Hot Pockets have a line of pockets called Lean Pockets that can be a healthy alternative. There are many different flavors, packed with protein and tastefulness. There are also many vegetarian options. A Lean Pocket can be enjoyed as a small meal or a quick bite on-the-go.

Oatmeal

Whether it’s steel cut oatmeal or the flavored pre-packaged kind, it makes for a super tasty snack that only requires a microwave, water and the oatmeal itself. Oatmeal can be a great alternative to the dining hall cereals or omelets. However, oatmeal doesn’t have to be just breakfast, it’s tasty at all times of the day, especially dessert!

Soup

My dorm room is always stocked with a couple cans of soup. A full can of soup can be a great meal and can easily be made in the microwavable when poured into a microwave-safe bowl. Make sure to choose a soup that is full of protein, like chicken, so that it will help you stay full for longer.

Frozen Vegetables.

Frozen vegetables such as peas, broccoli or carrots can be heated up in the microwave and it creates a sort of steamed vegetable taste. As long as you have access to a place to keep your veggies frozen, this can be an incredibly quick and healthy snack. Next time when you’re studying, reach for the veggies not the chips!
