Freshman Blog: 7 Must-Haves for Every College Freshman’s Wardrobe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

As a girl who came from a high school with a fairly strict dress code, it’s needless to say that my wardrobe was lacking upon coming to college. Most of my closet consisted of polos and khakis (which were basically the only items of clothing that were in dress code), and we all know that those kinds of clothes don’t really work in college, especially at the University of Illinois. So, I have put together a list of 7 cute, functional, and most of all COMFORTABLE must-have items for every college freshman’s wardrobe.

1. Yoga Pants– Probably the single most important item of clothing in my closet. Not only are yoga pants super comfortable and easy to slip on for that dreaded 8 AM (or let’s be realistic…even a 9 or 10 AM), but they are also not completely hideous. They are usually pretty body-conscious, unlike big, baggy sweatpants. Pair it with cute knit top and TOMS shoes and you are ready in a flash (and don’t look like you just rolled out of bed either)! Just beware the panty line!

2. Skinny Jeans– These are an obvious choice, but never underestimate the power of a figure-flattering, dark-washed pair of skinnies. Not only perfect for class (when you feel a little more energetic than throwing on your yoga pants), but they also look classy and polished for a night out on Green Street.

3. Rain Boots– I always thought rain boots, or “wellies”, as they are sometimes called, were only reserved for toddlers and young children, but they are all over the U of I campus. Look for a pair with a fun pattern or just a solid  (but interesting) color, and you will look chic and be ready for those big puddles!

4. Half-Zip– The perfect sweatshirt to wear with jeans to class or just with yoga pants or sweats when studying in your dorm. It is comfortable, functional, and in a fun color, it will become one of your favorite things to wear. Look at Victoria’s Secret PINK for some adorable options!

5. Trench Coat– Who doesn’t look fierce in a trench coat? Channel your inner Audrey Hepburn in a classic, belted trench, and you will add some serious sophistication to any outfit.  Trenches are ideal for those cloudy, cold mornings when you are running to class, and they definitely look better than your North Face fleece.

6. Little Black Dress– A form-fitting, not-too-short LBD can be a girl’s best weapon.  Wear this on a date, to your sorority exchange, or to a party on the weekends, and you can guarantee you will turn heads. For a cheap, but still fashionable LBD, check out H&M and Forever 21.

7. Scarves– SCARVES, SCARVES, SCARVES. They are my obsession. Scarves make any outfit (no matter how simple) look a million times better, and in these upcoming cold months, they are a necessity. Make sure you have several different kinds of scarves in a variety of colors and patterns. One of my favorite things to wear is a simple white v-neck tee, a pair of dark-wash skinnies, and a patterned scarf. Easy, understated, and stylish.

So, fellow freshman collegiettes, make sure you have all 7 of these things in your closet because I can guarantee you, they will be invaluable investments!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
