Cute Ways to Upcycle Your Birchbox on Every Craft Level

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Calling all lazy-girl crafters and craft aficionados alike, it’s time to pull those empty Birchboxes out of the recycling bin.

Whether the thought of crafting gives you major anxiety or you’re the queen of creativity, we have a DIY Birchbox upgrade project for you to try this weekend. Prepare to try out these simple ideas while sitting atop your throne of rhinestones and ribbon.

Upcycle 1: Desk Organizer

Craft skill level: “Most of my crafts end up looking more like Pinterest fails …”

This is the ultimate craft for the un-crafter. It’s cute, practical and easy. No really, you put tape on a box. You got this; we believe in you.

Materials:

  • Empty Birchbox (You can use either the top lid or bottom lid of the box depending on what you want to store in it.)

  • Washi tape (A decorative tape you can find at any craft store!)

Steps:

1. Pick out a cute washi tape.

2. Wrap washi tape around the sides of your Birchbox. Keep it centered for a nice clean, look.

3. Put all of the junk you’ve been hoarding on your desk into your new organizer. Voila!

Upcycle 2: Birchbox Photo Frame

Craft skill level: “I’m a Pinterest Queen.”

You can never have too many cute picture frames. Let’s be honest, all of your Instagram pics are super cute. You have to show them off somehow, right? This project takes a little more skill but is still fairly simple to do.

Materials:

  • Empty Birchbox (The deeper bottom lid works best for this project.)

  • Paint

  • Paintbrush

  • Scissors

  • Cute clothespins

  • Ribbon

  • Your favorite Instagram photo! (You can print these at Walgreens.)

Steps:

1. Paint the outside of your box. The inside of your box should already be patterned, so you can just leave it as is.

2. Place the box vertically and using scissors (or any sharp item), poke a hole about one inch down from the top, on both sides of the box. This is where you will string your ribbon through, so make sure the holes are centered.

3. Beginning at the outside of the box, string your ribbon inward, through the hole.

4. Before you string your ribbon through the other end, put both of your clothespins onto the ribbon.

5. Pull the ribbon through the other side of the box and tie both ends off, so that the ribbon is hanging firmly inside the box.

3. Hang your favorite Instagram pic on the clothespins and display!

Whether you’re a Pinterest fangirl or makeup junkie, channel your artsy side, and make use of both your obsessions: beauty and crafts. It’s time to make your empty Birchbox beautiful again!
