Lindsay’s Fashion Blog: Hipster Glasses

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

“Hipsters glasses” are eyeglasses without the prescription which many people have started to incorporate within their accessories. Nothing is wrong with these glasses except for people who have prescription glasses and are accused of being a hipster, or joining the bandwagon. That spells out a problem for about roughly 64 percent of Americans who wear prescription glasses.

Many can admit that when this trend first presented itself it was all the rage and you could not help but be sucked into it. Celebrities did it, rappers, heck, even politicians joined in! It then became a nuisance and a bit winded when everyone did it. People have a tendency to stop liking things when everyone else shares the same interests. But the revival of these hipster glasses has its highs and lows. My question is “Are these glasses still around?” I remembered seeing these glasses my sophomore year in high school, circa 2007, I will admit I partook in this trend because I was young and being like everyone was “cool.” During the lows of this trend 3-D glasses was the younger sibling and wanted the attention so many brought it upon themselves to pop out the lenses. Not only is your vision messed up with the lenses, but don’t people know that humans are already 3-D! Okay, so the cons to wearing those 3-D glasses outweigh the pros. Fast forward 5 years later and I cringe at the thought of me wearing those glasses. The varieties of these glasses come in a multitude of colors but mainly one style. While they may have a distinct look from eyeglasses with prescriptions they are still extremely similar if you like the style.

Unfortunately as time passes, judgments are formed and many have brought it upon themselves to give crap to others who wear these hipster glasses. Oops, those are prescription glasses? Now you feel like a jerk because you talked about someone with eyeglasses. Or you called out someone for wearing glasses when you used to wear them. Either way neither side is good. I eventually stopped wearing these glasses because it was a trend and I learned that this it is somewhat offensive to those with prescription eyeglasses. Sure you may want to look fashionable or smarter but there are tons of other ways to go about it. To avoid confrontation, avoid the hipster glasses.
