This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.
Katie Sall is the type of person who can make the whole room light up with her smile. She is the sweetest, weirdest (in a good way) and kind hearted person you can ever cross paths with. I have no idea how she does it but she manages balancing the Academic Honors Program, being President of Delta Zeta and an active social life. She is the definition of a person who puts others before herself and without a doubt has a heart too big for her body. Meeting her this year at ISU was a true blessing. If you see her around don’t hesitate to say hi she’s one of the friendliest people out there.

Her Campus ISU: What is one of your favorite things about ISU?
Katie Sall: I’m sorry I have two because I am insanely indecisive. One would have to be the sunsets here.
Even though BloNo is flatter than my chest was at 12 years old and the corn fields can be boring
sometimes, I am mesmerized by how open and clear the horizon is when the sun sets. If you want to
watch a great sunset go to the top of Watterson and I promise it won’t disappoint. The second thing
would have to be that I can get anywhere on campus in at least 10 minutes. I love that ISU is small,
clean, and simple. I like simplicity.
HC ISU: What are you involved in on campus?
Katie: I am a member of the Honors Program and the newly elected president of the Delta Zeta sorority
on campus. These two in combination with one another keep me super busy with schoolwork and
sorority shenanigans, but they have made my first year here so rewarding. I can’t wait to continue to get
involved throughout my Redbird career.
HC ISU: What are your plans for summer once you make it through the deadly finals week?
Katie: Well, I will be returning to my glorious and extravagant job as a summer camp counselor. What
better way to spend my days than with a million children tackling me and tattling on one another for
absurd things? I love them though. It’s entertaining and most of the time they’re adorable. Other than
that, I love festivals and concerts, so you’ll see me at Country Thunder and (hopefully) Lollapalooza as
well (even though nothing will ever out-do Eminem’s performance last summer, God bless Shady).
HC ISU: Do you have a bucket list? What’s on it?
Katie: I have a non-existent bucket list. As in, I’ll say things are “on my bucket list” but I don’t actually
have a piece of paper where I write them down. Some things on it are: to see the Cubs win a world
series, to visit McGee’s Pub in New York (the bar that inspired McLaren’s on How I Met Your Mother),
and to have something of mine published… somewhere.
HC ISU: How would you classify your style?
Katie: Very simple, kind of bohemian, and a lot of comfortable. I have an obsessive love for Target’s
clothes and accessories because they’re affordable and classic. I try to make my outfits look like I didn’t
try that hard… if that makes sense.
HC ISU: What’s your biggest pet peeve?
Katie: Oh. Easy. When I can hear, see, or sense somebody chewing, eating, or slurping in my vicinity.
My mother actually thinks I have a condition called Misophonia because I can get seriously angry about
it. She saw it on Dr. Phil once. A teenage girl punched her mother in the face for chewing too loudly! I
mean… I have left my dinner table at home, but I’m not THAT bad. It’s kind of ridiculous actually, but
I just can’t stand it.
HC ISU: What do you look for in a guy?
Katie: It seems as though I have a pattern for liking brown-haired, brown-eyed boys who work at pizza
places. This is entirely coincidental; I don’t look for those things. What I do look for is someone who is
funny with a splash of sarcasm, has a mature sense of loyalty, and can take my mind to deeper levels and
new places. I’d like to be with someone who challenges me to be a better person in every aspect. Also it
would be nice if they like the same music as me because that makes everything better.
HC ISU: Tell us something not many people know about you.
Katie: My real name is Kathryn. My parents have never called me Kathryn, but it’s my real name.
Katie is cool though. Uhh, I figure skated for 11 years. Yes, I could do “jumpy” and “spinny” things
(laughs).
HC ISU: What is the first attribute you look for when you’re first meeting a guy?
Katie: I know this is weird, but I pay such close attention to a guy’s grammar when first starting to
talk/text them. Maybe it’s the English major in me, but I think it can say a lot about the person. Right
off the bat I think honesty is crucial too.
HC ISU: Biggest turn off? (Deal breaker)
Katie: A deal breaker is when a guy’s ego is bigger than his (you know what). I can’t stand when people
only perceive life through their lens. If you’re selfish, always have to be right, and don’t have an open
mind? Sorry, can’t do it.
HC ISU: Biggest turn on? (Prince Charming)
Katie: A guy who is passionate and shows his emotions. The “too tough” attitude is not something I’m
fond of, and I adore when a guy can show how he’s feeling without being afraid.
HC ISU: What is your opinion on the squirrels on the quad?
Katie: I would like to be reincarnated as one. I spotted one continuously jump on a branch, sway up and
down, and fly off – over and over and over again. The thing was having so much fun and I thought to
myself, “ what a beautifully free rodent.” They’re awesome in my book.
HC ISU: Favorite Show on Netflix?
Katie: In order: The Office. American Horror Story. Gossip Girl.
HCISU: What’s your favorite 90’s jam?
Katie: Any song by Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, or ‘N SYNC will get me going.
HC ISU: Ideal Date?
Katie: An adventurous hike up a mountain on a beautiful day. At the top, a cute little picnic with peanut
butter and jelly sandwiches. Then, enjoying the view of nature each other’s company.
