Five Ways to Stay Sunny Through the Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

Following the month of December, something happens that I call the winter blues. Without the anticipation of the holidays to keep people busy, winter becomes more of a hassle than it seemed when houses were decorated with an array of colorful lights. As soon as winter break ends and the new semester begins, students are counting down the days untils Spring and Summer break, but there is a good portion of the snowy semester to tackle first. With the lack of sunlight to keep people energized, finding other ways to add warmth to the cold winter days is crucial! Here are five ways to stay sunny and motivated through the cold, sunless semester:

  1. Summer themed phone wallpaper

Cell phones are hardly ever out of reach these days and are being checked constantly (even outside in the freezing weather). By changing your wallpaper to something tropical (my preference being a picture of a palm tree) or to a fun picture from the previous summer, it’s like you’re carrying a little piece and reminder of summer everywhere you go!

  2. Planning a vacationWhat better way to stay motivated through the semester then by having a reward waiting at the end? Planning a getaway with family or friends is a great way to ensure that you’ll get all the sunny days you need once you finish the semester! Planning also takes time, so during the chilly, below zero days you can avoid going stir crazy by using that time to book flights and activities for the trip!
  3. Exercising

Once snow hits the ground, many students stop walking to class, removing their once major physical activity from their day. Making a plan to go to the gym throughout the semester can keep you on your grind and ensure that you get the summer body you desire! It will also help you get stronger so that you are ready to take on all the swimming and beach volleyball you’ll be doing when summer does arrive!

  4. Movies

When the cold will just not let up, finding a way to add warmth to your day seems almost impossible. This is the perfect time to take a break by mentally taking a vacation and what better way to do that than by watching your favorite summer themed movies? Watching movies that take place somewhere warm or are all about summer fun can be a great way to get pumped for what’s to come, relieve stress, and add a little sunlight to your day!

  5. Adding color to your outfits

Although everyone breaks out their warm, dark colored clothing for winter, adding colorful details can make a huge difference during those gray, overcast days. Find small ways to add some color to your outfit, like adding a neon headband or painting your nails something bright! Remember: It’s the little things!
