Celebrating the holidays away from home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

‘Tis the season for projects, papers and finals. With these stressors, some college students don’t have the luxury of taking time away from their studies to spend the holidays at home. No worries, there are several things you can do to bring the holiday spirit to your dorm or apartment this season!

Get your roommates involved by cooking a ”family dinner” together. You can ask your mom or other family members for your favorite holiday recipes. Even though you aren’t at home, it doesn’t mean that you can’t eat like you are. Make a batch of Christmas cookies and pass them out to your friends. These holiday treats will make your apartment smell great and brighten up your friends’ day!

Decorate, decorate, decorate! One of the best parts of the holidays are the festive decorations. Go to Target or Wal-Mart for deals on stockings, lights and even Christmas trees, or search your basement at home for hammy downs that you can bring back to school to decorate your place. If your apartment or dorm room is decorated just like your family decorates every year, you will feel more at home.

Buy seasonal candles to make it smell more like the holidays. Wall plug-ins and candles make the place homey and full of Christmas spirit.

Beat your homesickness this season by making your apartment feel more like home. Grab your roommates and get them involved in the festivities!
