12 Things That Happen When You’re Shy Yet Outgoing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

There’s introverts, there’s extroverts…and then there’s us who fall in between. We are the grey area of personalities. The shy yet outgoing individuals who are either the life of the party, or the silent wallflower petting a cat in a corner somewhere. Here are some things that happen to those of us who can’t seem to pick a side:

1.   Meeting super outgoing people for the first time can sometimes be intimidating. Trying to engage in conversations can be difficult when it doesn’t feel natural, and we find ourselves laughing at other people’s conversations more than actually speaking. This also goes for people we meet who aren’t immediately warm and welcoming.

2.    Some people view us as timid, while others think we are loud and crazy.

3.    We don’t know what makes us shy, and sometimes it’s irritating. Having “quiet” as our first impressions to some people can get pretty annoying when we know this isn’t truly who we are.

4.   We’re not always the best at being assertive, but when the time is right we will say whatever to whoever.

5.   We always think before we speak.

6.   We choose how talkative we want to be in every situation. If we’re not in the mood, we’re not in the mood. If we’re having a great day and are feeling social, we might be the most talkative person in the room.

7.   We need alone time. Time to unwind and rejuvenate ourselves from being around people too long.

8.   Alcohol always brings out our wild sides. Going out with a group of people we don’t usually hangout with can be awkward at first, but after a few drinks in our system, we’ll be dancing on a table with them in no time.

9.   Small talk is annoying and we don’t like it, but it can get the best of us when we feel nervous or uneasy.

10.   We have a tight-knit group of friends that know our biggest secrets, but we also have some friends who only know us as a good time.

11.   We love socializing and meeting new people, but don’t always feel comfortable doing so.

12.   We tend to overthink and analyze everything. Something as simple as a text can put us into evaluation mode.

In our opinion, being a nice blend of extrovert and introvert just means we’re well-rounded. We are the people who keep things interesting, so enjoy the advantages of simultaneously being mysterious, awesome and a little bit awkward.
