Money Matters: Spring Break on a Collegiette Budget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hollins chapter.

Spring Break is fast approaching, Collegiettes!  If you’re like most of us here at Hollins, you’ve been looking forward to the break since Spring Term started.  So what’s in the works for our Collegiettes?  Whether you’re heading home or traveling to visit family and friends, here are some helpful hints on how to save money and still have a fantastic spring break!

There are a lot of benefits to traveling home for spring break.  For one, where else can you bring a month’s worth of clothes to be cleaned for free?  Going home is a good option for those who may be a little homesick after being at school for so long.
If you have a lot of work to catch up on, heading home is often beneficial.  Without the distraction of parties and friends, you can concentrate better on all your post-midterm work.  Above all, you can (finally) catch up on some sleep!

If your spring break plans include travelling with friends, there are some good ways you can save money and still have a great break.  Let’s say you are planning on going to Virginia Beach with your friends.  The most cost effective way to get there is by splitting the cost of gas and couch surfing once you arrive.  If you don’t have a place to stay when you get there, fear not, because there are many places that rent to college students for a week at a time for reduced rates.  One of the benefits of doing this is that you can house many people in a small space cheaply.  By having everyone contribute money for housing, you drastically reduce the fees you would pay on your own.

It’s also a good idea to cook together instead of going out for every meal.  Food and drinks can be very expensive at restaurants and cooking together is an easy way to save a lot of money.  Plus, you can tailor the meal to your exact liking and it’s fun!

For those who are travelling across country or out of the states, it is important to remember to stay on a budget.  Don’t spend more than you can afford on trinkets or souvenirs for your friends and family.  Simply taking photos can mean more than buying an expensive keychain or scarf for your loved ones.  By showing your friends and family a scrapbook of your travels, they can feel as though they were with you on your journey.  This is a good money saving tip that will also help you to remember your travel experience better in the future.  If you don’t have a fancy camera, that’s ok.  Just buy an inexpensive disposable camera and develop the pictures upon your return to school.

So, Collegiettes, don’t forget; no matter what your plans are for spring break, you can do them cheaply and still have an awesome time!
