Greek of the Week: Payton Newsome

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

Payton Newsome is a force to be reckoned with! Payton is a third-year biology major on a pre-med track with a 4.05 cumulative GPA! She was recently inducted into the Beta Kappa Chi Honor Society and is a member of the Minority Association for Pre-Health Students. Payton is a Spring 16 Initiate and #39 of the Gorgeous and Talented Gamma Theta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. Watch out, because the future Dr. Newsome is taking the medical world by storm!

HC: What made you interested in your organization?

GOW: The women in my family who are AKAs definitely inspired me and made me interested in my organization. I admire the type of women they are and they embody everything I want to be.

HC: What has adjusting to Greek life been like?

GOW: It’s actually been a pretty smooth transition. At first I was trying to figure out how to juggle class and all the community service and different activities we have. Now I’ve found a way to balance everything together.

HC: Do you feel like Greek life has changed you?

GOW: I feel like it has changed me in a good way. Being a member of AKA has helped me build my leadership skills and has forced me to get out of my comfort zone which is something I really needed.

HC: Do you think people have a different perception of you or treat you differently now that you’re Greek?

GOW: With my immediate friends and the people I know personally, no. Everyone in my life pretty much treats me the same, they just know that I’m busier now.

HC: What is it like having line sisters?

GOW: It’s the best thing ever! If I’m doing something, I know I’ll have people to cheer me on! I recently got inducted into the Beta Kappa Chi Honor Society and for my induction ceremony, some of my sisters came to cheer me on which was super sweet! Just knowing that if I’m feeling down, one of my sisters will be there to talk and pick me back up is a great feeling!

HC: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

GOW: I see myself working as some kind of doctor (I don’t know what type of doctor I want to be yet) and with a husband and kids!

HC: What is one thing about yourself that you’ve never told anybody?

GOW: I was in Girls Scouts for 12 years, but I don’t really like telling people. People already consider me a goody two-shoes, but I’m kind of trying to shake that perception. I’m not wild, but I’m not super innocent either.
