I know you have all been patiently waiting for Her Campus’ Greek of the Week. This week, we chose the talented, yet laid-back Tony Mitchell. He is a Spring 2016 initiate of the Beta Chapter of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated. Because of his artistic inclination, he is apart of New Era Modern Dance Troupe and enjoys spoken-word poetry and drawing. Her Campus had the wonderful opportunity of learning more about him.

HC: What made you interested in Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, inc.?

TM:What made me interested in this particular organization, was the fact that it was the only fraternity where I felt comfortable with being myself. Every organization has their standard of who they want, but Iota Phi Theta doesn’t necessarily label you for who you want to be or aspire to be.

HC: What has been your favorite part about being Greek so far?

TM: My favorite part is the fact that you have so much power to influence those around you, for the better. You can influence people to do great things and spread great knowledge. People listen to you.

HC: What has been the biggest adjustment since you’ve crossed?

TM: Before, you had your older brothers there helping you to transition, but once you cross it’s like the training wheels are gone. Now it’s time to do the real work.

HC: How do you balance Greek Life as well as your social life?

TM: Balancing Greek life and social life is difficult, because sometimes you have to put one on the back burner. obviously priorities matter but what I try to do is make a set schedule for myself. If I have to do something for my organization or make time to socialize with my friends, I have a set time frame so they don’t conflict.

HC: What are some of the common misconceptions that people have of your organization?

TM: The fact that Iotas are underdogs or that they’re not cool… you know, the bad stereotypes. I feel as though you’re not technically the same person you were before you join an organization. But at the end of the day, those are just letters. The only thing you’re doing is growing as a person.

HC: What do you feel is the role of Black Greek Letter organizations in today’s society?

TM: The role is being somebody to look up to. Somebody to keep things moving in the right direction. I feel as though sometimes we as Black Greek Letter organizations,  lose sight of our main purpose, which is serving the black community. That’s so important and it should always come first.

HC: How would you describe Greek Life on campus?

TM: We’re not as unified as we could be, mainly because of the stereotypes placed one each organization and old grudges that may have been passed down.

HC: What’s your favorite part about having brothers?

TM: I grew up with only one sister so I never really had a brother, aside from my Father and Uncle’s. When I joined this organization I had so many brothers that I could call on for anything. We’re all in college and we can relate. We’re all going through the same things.

HC: How would you describe yourself outside of being, “Tony the Iota”?

TM: I would say I’m very observant and quiet. I like to think before I do things. It gives you a better outlook on life when you’re laid back and just chill.
