Name: Laur Rivera

What are you involved with on campus?

I volunteer for the Study Buddies program. I am also an AV technician, a HEOP scholar, and when I’m back home, I am a volunteer coach for the Central Park North Stars (a hockey team for children with special needs). Oh yeah, and I’m a goalie on the Women’s Club Team too.

What inspired you to create a Women’s Club Ice Hockey team at Hamilton?

I wanted to start something where women of all skill levels could come out and play. Hockey doesn’t end when college does, it ends after we’ve taken our last breath.

What was the process of starting a club like?

The process of starting a club sport is different than starting a club. We don’t apply for funding through student assembly and we work with athletics. The process has its pros and cons, but all and all, the athletics department has been pretty supportive.

What is your favorite part of playing hockey?

Hockey is really special to me. I’d say my favorite part of hockey is the reward you get from working hard and never giving up. Every time I get that puck, as a player or a goalie, I have the opportunity to do something amazing, not for myself, but for everyone on the team. When watching professional hockey, I just love the dedication. Hockey is the kind of sport where you keep going no matter what. It is the epitome of resilience.

What are your goals for the team?

My current goals are pretty typical. I want to get a game or two set, build camaraderie, improve our skills, and most importantly have fun.  Our team is working hard and we have some really great players.
