This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GSU chapter.

The Greatest Minds Society  organization is geared towards African Americans and minority students on campus.

According to the organization’s  official mission statement, the goal is to promote scholarship, diversity, excellence, leadership and high achievement among African American and minority student populations and groups (undergraduate and graduate) on campus.

We spoke to the vice president of Greatest Minds, Andrew Reid and he further explained the organization’s goal.

“ There is an emphasis on black people, but that is because that is the majority of our group. However, we focus on minorities as a whole,” Reid said.

Greatest Minds  hosts symposiums and event based panels that highlight issues, as well as accomplishments among minorities. Educated and knowledgeable guest speakers participate in these events as well.

Greatest Minds Society’s most recent discussion titled “Calling out Racism,”  was held on February 24, 2016.  The discussion featured Susan Neimark, author, educator, and marathoner. Ms. Naimark spoke on issues dealing with racism from a white woman’s perspective. During the discussion,  a diverse group of students and faculty were able to ask questions and comment on their experiences dealing with discrimination and racism.

President of Greatest  Minds Society , George Greenidge says that the key to success in understanding different races and cultures is dialogue.

“ We want to hear from a white person that understands their white privilege. We want to hear from a  person of immigrant status who was born and raised in The United States. Greatest Minds is a platform for people like this to have a voice. “

Greatest Minds Society also hosted a three day series of symposiums, including 16 event based panels . One of the discussions pertained to the gentrification of communities in Atlanta, Georgia. Breakfast, lunch and dinner  were provided  to the guest speakers as well as the students and faculty that were present.

With free food and flyers, this organization welcomes students and faculty to attend their events and participate in the conversations.

If you are interested in participating in their events or becoming a member, check out Greatest Mind Society’s Orgsync page and visit their Facebook page.
