You never really understand how powerful being away from the hustle and bustle of school, work, or social life, is until you are sitting under the stars without cell service having quality conversation with the ones you love.

This weekend I spent my time rock climbing in central Washington. During this time, I had time to not only bond with close friends I’ve known for a while, but also get closer with others and just relax. I had the ability to not feel tied to my phone and feel in touch with my inner thoughts. Being outdoors itself is a serene experience in which I can be silly, improve my mental health, and experience pure beauty.

Being silly.

During this specific outdoor excursion, we sang Queen a capella (not too horribly), swung upside down on my rope (not necessarily under regulation), and danced to no music (completely horribly). When you take away the external forces that routine life brings, you are completely free from distractions and can focus on the people you are. I love, love, love being surrounded by people who genuinely love being outside and in that state of seclusion.

Improving my mental health.

I have fallen in love with being uncomfortable outdoors. Whether it is being dirty and having my hair so tangly that I can’t brush it, or feeling nippy in the constant wind, there is a sense of happiness and fulfillment that occurs. Hiking a vertical stretch or climbing a 5.10d route (challenging rock climbing wall) can make my body feel like it’s going to break, but finishing that challenge is one of the best feelings in the world. The challenges I face and intentional time in nature is what helps improve my mental health.

Experiencing pure beauty.

Nothing compares to being surround by trees, rocks, or any form of nature. Breathing in the fresh air that is not filled with pollution or smog is the greatest thing. A beautiful sunset can make me feel so small in the best way, where I can reflect on myself and where I am at in life.

You guys should all check out the Gonzaga Outdoors website or stop by their office in the basement of Hemmingson if you want to get outdoors! There are so many awesome opportunities to go with a group or try a hike or trip on your own.
