How to Survive the Ten Hour Plane Ride

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gettysburg chapter.

Maybe you’re going abroad. Maybe you’re going on vacation. Maybe you just go to a school that is far away from home. Either way, a ten hour plane ride just sounds tedious, boring, and annoying. Even with layovers, it can seem to just drag on forever. Not to fear! There are plenty of things you can do to make the trip seem shorter.

1. Remember that book that you’ve been wanting to read all semester? Read it! You finally have the time.

2. On that note, remember those chapters you need to read for class? Or that essay you meant to start weeks ago? Here’s an elongated stretch of time where you can work relatively uninterrupted with few distractions. What are you waiting for?

3. But before you go crazy from working for ten hours straight, check out some music. Don’t bring a pre-made playlist. You can waste anywhere from ten minutes to half an hour creating the perfect playlist that’s more than four hours long. Believe it or not closing your eyes and listening to some music, even if you can’t sleep, can really help the time fly.

4. Got any other hobbies? Bring those along too. Some knitting or a sketchbook or even just an adult coloring book can fit nicely in a carry on. And, no, you won’t be annoying your neighbors as long as your hobby isn’t too loud.

The point is, bring more than one thing. Eventually, you’re going to get bored with whatever you’re doing. But that’s why you brought those other activities. Mix them up. Break up the time. Do something that will make you feel like you’ve done something productive. And now for the most important things:

5. So, a lot of these things involve batteries of some kind, so bring extra. Bring a portable power bank. Bring a charging cord (some planes do have outlets available in the seats). Bring extra physical batteries if you have anything that requires them. Even if your don’t use them, you won’t regret it.

6. Get up and walk around at LEAST once every three hours. Walk up and down the aisle. Go the bathroom. Doesn’t matter. Just MOVE! Your body will thank you.

And have a nice flight!
