15 Tips to Get You Through College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

1.      Going to class does make a difference, but it is also what you experience outside of class that matters and can have a huge effect on your life.

2.      No one cares how good you look at 8a.m… or on Sundays for that matter.

3.      Finding someone to hook up with is easy, but finding someone who genuinely cares about you is a lot harder.

4.      Be careful with what you put on social media sites (including instagram); employers and schools do look at these! What you post will affect how they view you and whether or not you get the job.

5.      Get to know your professors. They have experienced a lot more than you and have a lot of wisdom to share; they might even help you decide what path you want to follow in life!

6.      Money matters. Whether you are paying for college yourself or not, don’t throw it away on things you don’t need.

7.      Go out of your way to build relationships. Even if you are just acquaintances, networking is important and will help you throughout your life.

8.      Drugs are everywhere, so be careful! You never know what you’re getting into once you start doing them, and aside from addiction, some drugs can be laced with other substances that can really harm you.

9.      Stay healthy! Believe it or not the Freshman 15 isn’t that big of a deal — I actually LOST weight my first year. However, staying in shape and eating healthy can be difficult if you’re super stressed out (I always binge on Starbucks when I have a hard time). Try to set aside half an hour for stretching, yoga, cardio, etc., anything to keep a healthy body and mind.

10.  Don’t feel pressured to do something you don’t want to, but be open to new experiences.

11.   Do what you love. Even though everyone wants to be successful, you will never be happy if you do it just for the money.

12.   “You won’t understand everyone, but you should respect them”.

13.  Don’t be a negative nancy. Not only does this affect those around you, but it keeps you stuck in a bad mood all day. If you’re feeling down, go for a quick pick me up and try to smile a bit. You’ll be surprised by how quickly your mood will change!

14.  Don’t waste your time on people who don’t care about you.

15.  Meet new people! If there’s one thing I’ve learned while being in college is that everyone has a story, and most of the time you will learn something from them.
