Tips for a Successful Friendsgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

Thanksgiving is a time of the year that everyone spends with their family. We give thanks, have a huge feast (that often results in a food baby) and enjoy the company of our loved ones. In recent years, it has become a popular trend to host a ‘friendsgiving’ a week or so before the holiday itself. Essentially, it involves having a pre-thanksgiving meal with your friends and other loved ones you normally wouldn’t be spending Thanksgiving with. Most people enjoy the company, laughs, and expressing gratitude for those around them. It can get quite emotional sometimes– depending on the people you’re with. All in all, it is a guaranteed fun time, and though it has gained popularity, some people shy away from enjoying this unconventional holiday because they believe it’ll cost a lot of money to host it. Here are a few ways to host an amazing friendsgiving without breaking the bank.

The first step is inviting people. Of course, you want your guest list to consist of people you love being around and truly make your life better; however, you want to make sure these are people that you can rely on to help pitch in. You should make a list of items you need, from decorations to food, and have your friends pick which ones they can bring. Make sure to keep track of what everyone is bringing, so there aren’t two of the same things.

The second step is to try your best to find cool videos that’ll give you DIY options for decorations. You don’t have to be an artist or really even have a creative bone in your body to pull off some cool decorations. If you feel you can create things easily, then take your pick on some trickier videos, otherwise, there are plenty of beginner friendly videos.

The third step is essential, but sometimes overlooked: getting some plates and silverware. This is easily done by going to the dollar store and getting enough plates, cups, napkins, and utensils  for your guests. This not only saves you some bucks, it spares you from the stress of washing dishes afterwards.

The final step is to have everyone come in and set the table with the the array of food, it’s important to set it all up in a convenient area, so that guests are able to readily help themselves. Create a playlist for the gathering, give thanks to each other, and enjoy the conversations friends partake in during the meal.

Friendsgiving is an incredibly cool experience, and it really spices up the holiday season. It’s also a nice way to spend some time with people you wish you could be with on the actual day of Thanksgiving. My friend recently hosted one, and it was such a fun time. We spent time with people we haven’t seen in a while, and those we’re fortunate enough to see regularly. We all shared stories about how life has been going for u and  filled each other in on future plans. It’s a great start to the holidays, especially if your friends travel for them. I highly recommend stepping out of your comfort zone and throwing one for yourself!
