I Love Being In A Sorority

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FIU chapter.

The word “sorority” may automatically cause you to imagine high pitched screams and bathtubs full of glitter (I wish!) but it’s about time we leave those stereotypes behind.

I was never one eager to join Greek life. With their constant hazing accusations and trouble making headlines, I had my mind set that lifestyle just wasn’t for me.

Until I joined college and things got rough. My days were lonelier and my free time excessive. I wanted to be a part of something that filled my heart with motivation and happiness. Scrolling through the endless fall recruitment flyers on Instagram, I decided to give it a shot!

At this point what did I have to lose, right?

Luckily, what I found was more than I ever expected.

I found women that genuinely cared about my well-being. Women that pushed me to always be a better version of myself. Women that shared the same values I grew up with. Women that showed me the importance of being a leader. Women that impacted me in ways I would never forget.

With that, I also found women I may not always see eye to eye with. It taught me the importance of respecting the opinions of others and learning to love them regardless.

Being in a sorority hasn’t always been rainbows and butterflies, but it’s showed me a lot about myself, gotten me where I am today, and pushed me beyond the borders I knew.

It’s not always about the exciting social life, corny big and little poses, and one too many Snapchats on chapter Thursdays.

Our letters stand for something greater, and that’s an unconditional love I’ll never let go of.
