12 Modern Love Songs for Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at F and M chapter.

1. Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran is just charming and this song proves it. He gives a heart felt and simple performance. This song has a quirky romantic lyrics that feel honest which really makes it one of the best current love songs.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp-EO5I60KA

2. Earned It by The Weekend

Fifty Shades of Grey is what everyone is talking about…again! The movie will be released on Valentine’s Day, but what is really making a hit is the soundtrack. The Weekend lends his vocals to this track and it is mesmerizing. It’s not your traditional romantic tune, but he impresses.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xe_iCkFsQKE

3. 3 am by Meghan Trainor

Meghan Trainor’s new album “Title” hits the theme of love more than once. From talking about “Walk of shames” to  lying bfs in “Lips Are Movin’,” her album is for a modern girl. “3 am” was a highlight for me since it captured those late nights when you can’t stop thinking of that special someone.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMFSO_Bv3lk

4. Like Real People Do by Hozier

Hozier’s voice is so tender and beautiful in all it’s raspy glory! This song just captures the intimacy of being in love well, especially in a word surrounded by so many distractions.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97uHUyPL5dA

5. Blank Space/Style Mashup by Louisa Wendorff (with Devin)

Taylor Swift is the queen of the modern love song, but Louisa’s mashup of T-Swift’s Blank Space and Style is so magical that even Taylor shared it! It’s somber and touching all at once.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7m3o5LuFKxg

6. Love Me Like You Do by Ellie Goulding

Another track from Fifty Shades of Grey, Ellie Goulding delivers another great song! It’s definitely a pop song, but there is a softness that just oozes warm fuzzies that occur when you first fall in love.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJtDXIazrMo

7. Lay Me Down by Sam Smith

If Taylor is queen of the love song, Sam is the king! He never fails to fill a song with tender emotion. Better yet, his simple videos really capture the emotion and encompass the beginning and end of love.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaMq2nn5ac0

8. Sledgehammer by Fifth Harmony

These girls bring it home with “Sledgehammer.” If you’ve ever had butterflies in your stomach, you will relate to their catchy and upbeat song about the first time you fall in love.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCJ3rmiZFr8

9. All of Me by John Legend

This song doesn’t need much explanation. John Legend puts his “all” into this song. I don’t know how many times I sang this song at the top of my lungs this summer in the car wishing for him to serenade me.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=450p7goxZqg

10. Drunk In Love by Beyoncé and Jay Z

Beyoncé and Jay Z are the power couple of Hollywood right now. Beyoncé wasn’t afraid to give us all the details of their relationship with “Drunk in Love.” There is something so brutally honest in her song that I can help but note it as one of the most modern love songs.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1JPKLa-Ofc

11. Illusion by One Direction

One Direction is always in the spotlight for who they are dating, so it is no surprise that they have a good share of love songs. Long gone are the “What Make You Beautiful” days, One Direction is more mature and “Illusion” highlights how vulnerable boys can be in love.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbNqVNWydZg

12. Nightingale by Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato’s powerhouse voice on “Nightingale” sends shivers down my spine. Her lyrics about self-sacrifice for the one you love is touching and strong. While we are use to her self-confident anthems, I think Demi adds a new layer to love songs today.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkqsqWcdih4

I am currently a senior at Franklin and Marshall College in the picturesque city of Lancaster, PA. I am a Spanish and History major and I'm excited to be a writer for HerCampus F&M. I love finding new and interesting ways to design nails and always share it with others. I also love all things of adventurous and exotic natures, stories, art, and cute boys (let's not forget what we really are checking on HerCampus).
Along with being the Her Campus Franklin and Marshall Campus Correspondent, I am also the editor-in-chief of Epilogue, F&M's literary Magazine, Staff Writer for The College Reporter, F&M's student newspaper, and a very active member of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity. When not hard at work, you can find me writing, reading, geeking out over Disney movies with my friends, or doing art projects.
