It is well known that Exeter students need little excuse to dress up at the best of times, but whilst Halloween does fall on reading week, a time when many of us return to our home comforts, for those staying over this spooooky week there is entertainment and costume related fun galore. Here’s the HCX’s pick of Exeter’s offerings…

1. Following on from the success of the summer’s Enchanted Garden Ball, Halloween night will play host to the Enchanted Forest. With the promise of crazed dwarves, skeleton podium dancers, and acoustic bands set deep within a secret wooded location, it should certainly be a memorable evening. You can pick yourself up a ticket for £28 – so whilst it may not be the most purse friendly Halloween event, it’s not every day you can enjoy the delights of a Tarot Fortune Teller or Gin Alley. Definitely not one to miss.

2. If the idea of an evening of crazed dwarves doesn’t float your boat, many of the failsafe club favourites are opening up their doors for Halloween specials. Arena has already guaranteed both “special monster Halloween cocktails” and a “scarily late” opening time on the 31st, whilst it seems more than likely that Timepiece will open up their doors for a costumed special to rival that of Arena.

3. Whilst not strictly on Hallows eve, ExTunes at the Firehouse on October 27th will provide both a more laid back evening, but also potentially the ability to keep yourself free for house parties, movie nights, or even trick or treating for the 31st itself. As usual entry is free, and few Exeter students would argue that there is much better than the combination of Firehouse pizza with live (and for one night, spooky) tunes.

4. Following on from the success of the previous years, Exeter’s Zombie Ball is back on October 26th for its fourth year. Promising the “biggest and strongest line up to date”, bands such as Bleed From Within and Backhand Saloon will be taking to the stage following Exeter’s famed Annual Zombie walk through the city centre. At £16.50, it’s a darn sight cheaper than the Enchanted Forest and with promises of magicians and ventriloquists a plenty, this would make a great alternative Halloween night out.

5) If instead of you returning home, your parents are making the trip Devon way, Killerton House is a beautiful National Trust property situated just outside of Exeter. As well as showcasing some of the most stunning gardens and walks Devon has to offer, their Halloween Festival Day on the 30th October would make a great family or house day out. Entry is free for members, leaving spare funds for one seriously delicious cafe (Eton Mess Ice Cream anyone?) and your very own handpicked pumpkin… I’m sold!

Laura is a third year English Literature student at the University of Exeter. Laura has been a member of Her Campus since 2012, when she decided it was time to actually get involved in something CV worthy. Since joining HCX Laura has been heavily involved with the Culture team writing on everything from film reviews to blogging about what to do on your day off. Having never been involved in journalism before Laura has been pleasantly surprised by how much she has enjoyed her time at HCX. This year Laura is lucky enough to be the editor of Local Culture, and is relishing the excuse to explore Exeter in search of article ideas instead of tackling her extensive reading list. When Laura isn't writing for Her Campus, or staring aimlessly at her laptop in the library hoping a first class essay will miraculously appear, she loves to socialise with friends and explore the area surrounding Exeter (especially if it involves a beach). This summer Laura will be interning at OK! Magazine in their online department, as well as gaining work experience in the press office at Arsenal Football Club. Laura will also be relaxing with friends and family and booking as many holidays as possible. After University Laura wants to pursue a career in public relations in the travel and lifestyle industries. She intends to put off becoming an adult for at least another year by embarking on the classic 'gap year' experience and travelling the world- all in the aid of her future career of course...
