How to Fashionably Survive the British Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

It’s finally here, after months of planning and days and days of waiting, summer has finally arrived! At last you can leave the house without being weighed down by two jumpers and a coat, and instead you get to wear those outfits you’ve been dying to show off and try out some new summer looks. Here at Her Campus Exeter we can’t wait to hit the shops and stock up on the latest summer styles, but with so many different summer plans, it can be difficult to know what to wear for what occasion. With countless summer looks to choose from, we decided to look at some of the most stylish options for each, so that you can be guaranteed to look fabulous and fashionable no matter what your plans this summer.

Beach Beauty

Britain may be well known for its unpredictable and (admittedly) often disappointing weather but that does not mean we have to put away the bikinis and sunglasses and stay indoors. Ever hopeful and ever determined to get those summer tans, the beach is always a top priority of the summer. To really make a splash this summer, grab yourself an eye catching floral bikini that’s sure to make you feel fabulous with its colourful design. With some sparkly, spangled flip flops you can add a touch of glamour to the beach. Of course don’t forget the all-important sunglasses to complete that effortless modelesque beach look.

Festival Fashionista

It is impossible to talk about the British summer without thinking of festivals. With so many to choose from including the infamous Glastonbury festival, festival life has become a key part of the British summer. With wellies stealing the show, the festival look shows you don’t have to be wearing heels and a face full of makeup to look fabulous. To really steal the show this summer, a white lace top paired with some denim shorts are essential for capturing that summer style, and with some navy wellies adding a festival edge. You’ll be rocking that summer festival look in no time. And of course a playful and flirty flower headband is a music festival must.

Sporty Stunner

With the sun (hopefully) shining in the day and with warm long summer evenings ahead, summer is the perfect time to spend stretching out those sleepy winter legs and doing that workout you’ve been promising yourself you’d get round to all year. Being sporty however doesn’t mean you have to be resigned to baggy t-shirts and your old track suit bottoms, fitness can be fashionable. By injecting some colour into your sportswear you can be looking fresh and fiery in no time, and ready to conquer that summer body. Stylish leggings and snazzy footwear is also a must that will have you not only looking good but feeling good too.

Hiking Hottie

As stereotypical as a British summertime country walk may sound, it can’t be denied that Britain has some beautiful picturesque scenery. Sometimes there is nothing better than indulging in a bit of stereo-typicalness, grabbing some sandwiches and heading out for a walk with some friends (while making use of those new sunglasses). And for those lucky enough to have a special someone, of course nothing says romantic like a picnic lunch for two out on the rolling hills. Whether you are having fun with friends, or out on a romantic date, you can ensure you will look effortlessly chic by matching a grey vest top under a light denim shirt. By pairing it with some black jeans, stylish ankle boots and a statement necklace, you can add a modern twist to this laid back country look, showing that comfy can also be stylish.

City Chick

Of course no summer is complete without a trip to the busy urban life of the city. Though far from the stereotypical quiet British countryside, the city streets and flashing lights are just as much a part of Britain as the country lanes. The city is the perfect place to indulge yourself with gourmet restaurants, swanky cocktail bars and luxurious department stores. Full of things to do in an ever moving environment, city life has an electric atmosphere that’s difficult to find anywhere else; so it is essential to wear something equally electrifying and snazzy to make you feel city ready. To give yourself that sleek urban look, a classic navy summer dress is a must, and with some cork wedges to show off your summer tanned legs, you will look timelessly classy and glamorous. To finish off your city chic look, some black sunglasses and contrasting bright red lipstick will ensure that you stand out from the crowd and shine brighter than any of the city lights.
