‘Gilmore Girls’ quotes to embrace in 2017

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

2017 has arrived at last! With it, the new year brings a fresh start, a chance make some resolutions, dump bad habits, try new things, and to be a happier and slightly more put-together person (in a perfect world). At the same time, it is easy to get worked up in ‘new years resolutions’ and just create new sources of stress for yourself. Well, when in doubt, we look to ‘Gilmore Girls’, so check out these iconic quotes from this amazing show to embrace in 2017:

About Relationships

“Honey, relationships are hard.” – Lorelai Gilmore

This could not me more true. Gilmore Girls presents us with flawed and difficult periods within both Lorelai and Rory’s, familial and romantic relationships. Throughout the series we see antithetical sides to relationships; ease and bliss juxtaposed with discord and struggle. Lorelai’s outlook is grounded and realistic, dismissing the notion that relationships are glossy and ideal 24/7.

“This thing we’re doing, me, you, I’m in. I am all in.” – Luke Danes

Embrace honesty. Too often, our feelings within relationships are not spoken out loud, skirting round the edges of concrete meanings, assuming the other person will understand our feelings through some sort of telepathy…. This year, just be honest and to the point. So much easier.

Whether you’ve had a falling out with a friend, or you are getting over a romantic relationship, there’s no point kidding yourself that you are going to be 100% ready to take on everything as normal immediately. Take your time and relax and eat like a true Gilmore Girl.

About being anti-social and cynical

“People are particularly stupid; I can’t talk to any more of them.” – Michel Gerard

We all need our space. So take it. It’s really not worth forcing yourself to be ‘social’ if you are gaining no enjoyment from it.

“You are full of hate and loathing and I gotta tell you, I love it!” –  Lorelai Gilmore

Tell the people you care about the qualities you love about them.

Sometimes you don’t have to be anti-social and cynical on your own. Find someone you can rant endlessly too over a cup of coffee, whilst actually enjoying their company too!

About sarcasm

I’m doing internal cartwheels.” –  Lorelai Gilmore

This is a quote that needs to be slipped into conversations more often…

“Yeah I’m fine. I’m great. It’s a big, fat happy sunshine day for me.” – Luke Danes

If you are having a miserable, unfulfilling day, at least fill it with plenty of sarcasm.

About food

“Its so satisfying to watch people exercise while you eat junk food.” – Rory Gilmore

Obviously there is a limit to this quote; its not one to live your life day to day by. However, you cannot turn down the occasional event which involves consuming a lot of wonderful indulgent food, without feeling guilty about it.

Embrace both keeping yourself fit and healthy whilst also allowing yourself to treat your body.

And Finally…

“I have a new year’s resolution for you. Become more cynical and self-absorbed.” – Lorelei Gilmore

Maybe we all have the tendency to neglect ourselves mentally and physically. This year, take the time to be realistic about relationships and goals, and make time for yourself. It’s not sacrilege to spend an evening or so to yourself doing the things that relax your body and mind. Happy New Year everyone!
