Dress to Impress…for the Interview!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

It’s that time of year again. In addition to sorority rush and new class schedules, we need to start applying for those pesky, yet incredibly important, summer internships and jobs. How else are we going to gain real world experience (and make that extra cash for our mall excursions with the girls)? One of the most important parts of applying for a summer internship or job is the interview. Don’t be nervous! An important tip to remember: if you look great, you feel great, and if you feel great, you will be more comfortable during the interview.

So how do you assemble the perfect outfit that shows you’re a professional and serious worker, while incorporating a splash of your own style to show you aren’t just another face in the crowd? Take a look at these tricks to help create a business worthy outfit while staying true to who you are.

Find your perfect blazer. A blazer is a timeless piece that can effortlessly pull together any look in a stylish and sophisticated way. If you’re petite, try wearing a boxy blazer with the sleeves rolled up. If you want to accentuate your figure a little more, try a three-button blazer that nips in at the waist. Cropped blazers work well for most figures, especially when paired with sleek dresses. And don’t forget that you don’t need to have a black or navy blazer. Stores such as Urban Outfitters offer different colors so you can show off your personality!

Add an interesting top.Just because everybody else wears white oxford shirts doesn’t mean you have to. Find a top with an interesting pattern or color. It will make your look more memorable, and make you feel more confident if you’re wearing your favorite one!

Pair it up with the bottoms you’re most comfortable in.If you don’t feel comfortable, you won’t be acting your best, and you definitely want to put your best self out there for future employers! If you’re more of a skirt fan, look for a darker hued pencil skirt to tuck your top into. The top of the skirt should sit around your belly button, unless you are going for a high-waisted look. The hem of the skirt should hit just above or at your knee, but no shorter. Remember, you want to look professional for this interview! Make sure the fabric doesn’t pucker or scrunch anywhere, and sits flat on your waist. If you prefer to wear pants, check out The Limited or Express for a great selection of business bootcut and cropped skinny pants. Plain black is a classic, but neutral colors also work well (PS The Limited does tailoring for free with your Limited Card!).

Shoes and accessories are a girl’s best friend. In order to personalize this outfit, add your favorite bracelet, necklace, or earrings that are simple yet stunning. Or find a small silk scarf to wear in addition to your blazer and top. Belts also look great with fitted dresses and high-waisted bottoms and can add a pop of intense color. For shoes, find a pair of comfortable yet feminine shoes to get you in the business mood. Hey, not everything about the business world can be serious, so have a little fun with your heels! Avoid thick clunky heels, square fronts, and be careful with peep-toes…they can get pretty painful after a while! Black and nude always work well, but colorful heels that match your top or scarf can pull your outfit together. And don’t forget your bag on the way out!

Now that your wardrobe is all organized for the interview, stay calm and collected and be ready to show your best self. Just like your outfit, you will portray a great mix of professionalism and creativity, exactly the type of person employers are looking for. Good luck with the interview process, girls!
