Starved for The Hunger Games

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

Long gone are the days of team Edward or Jacob. The question on everyone’s lips these days is team Peeta or Gale?

The Hunger Games has become an obsession, sweeping the nation and thrusting the characters into the hearts of Elon students. The first book was published in 2008 and since then the trilogy has been gaining steam, with the first movie coming to theaters on March 23, 2012 and making $155 million on the opening weekend.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world in the country of Panem, the story of Katniss Everdeen quickly captures the attention of every reader and viewer. Thrown into her sacrifice as she takes her younger sister’s place in the Hunger Games – a televised fight to death that pits 24 teens, two contestants from each of 12 districts, against each other – the audience is captivated by her growth and experiences with both Peeta and Gale.

Through this amazing, heart-wrenching story people across the country have become embroiled in Katniss’ battle for survival and for love. In the first novel and movie, Peeta and Katniss, both from District 12, use their partnership to their advantage by creating a love connection they use to manipulate the rest of the country. But for Peeta this is more than a game, and it becomes obvious that he is in love with Katniss. After their escape from the area both Katniss and Peeta find their lives have changed, and not just in positive ways. Plagued by nightmares and guilt over the deaths of other contestants, the connection between Peeta and Katniss eventually disintegrates, only to be expanded later in the series. The one benefit to this disintegration is the potential when it comes to Katniss’ relationship with her friend and hunting partner, Gale. Fans are glued to their seats waiting and wanting to learn more about where these connections will take the characters.
When reading the series – “The Hunger Games”, “Catching Fire” and “Mockingjay” – it is impossible to tear yourself away from the rich characters and detailed account of their adventures and struggles, and the movie is no different. Brace yourself for a bumpy ride with characters that you will grow to love, and plunge in.
“You love me, real or not real?”
