Dylan Fitchett: Vocalist and guitarist for ‘Knockout Perez’

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

How was Knockout Perez created?

Three friends and I all realized we played the right instruments to start a band, so we did.

Where does the name come from?

Our friend with the last name Perez had a crazy experience outside of where we held band practice for the first year we played together. The name was a joke at first, but we thought it had a ring.

What kinds of songs does the band usually play?

We play a mix of originals and popular covers. Some originals are more jam/jazz influenced, and some are more singer/songwriter influenced. As for the covers, we usually try to do something different with the song to keep it fresh and to get people into it.

What’s been your favorite part about being in a band?

Performing live so many times has been really fun.

Who are your personal favorite artists?

I don’t like to call artists my “favorites” because I feel like it diminishes the other artists I like. My taste changes so often anyways that whatever my current “favorite” is would be irrelevant in a month. Currently I’m big into Hiatus Kaiyote, Wilco, Beck, Radiohead and so on. I typically get into artists with really unique sounds.

When did you first get into music?

I started playing guitar in 6th grade, which is when I started listening to music more heavily as well.

What’s your musical process like?

It changes song to song, but I find that the best songs are born when I come up with the melody for a chorus or verse simultaneously with the guitar part.

Do you think that you’ll continue to pursue music after graduation? What would be your dream job?

Yes, my dream job would be to be able to support myself through my own music that I write. No matter what job I have, I know I’ll always keep performing.

Knockout Perez’s first EP was released on April 13 and is available here.
