10 Ways To Take Care Of Your Sick SO

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ECU chapter.

Unfortunately, we’re all prone to getting sick every now and then. But what do you do if the one you love is the one who gets sick? Here’s a list of 10 simple things you can do to show them how much you care and to help their recovery process feel a little less painful:

1. Take them to the doctor

It can be scary when someone you care about is going through a bad illness. Take them to the doctor ASAP to get them checked out. When someone you love is sick, that is never the time to take any chances.

2. Help them with remembering to take all their medications

Your sick SO probably isn’t in the right mindset to be keeping track of the times they’re supposed to be taking all their meds. Help them by taking note of when they last took their medicine and setting an alarm on your phone for when it’s time to take another dose.

3. Make sure they’re drinking plenty of fluids and getting lots of rest

Growing up, your mom didn’t nag you to sleep and drink water when you were sick for no reason! Make sure your SO is getting lots of sleep and drinking lots of water to ensure they get healthy again in no time.

4. Keep a good eye on them

Other than making sure they’re resting, drinking, and taking all their meds, sometimes the best thing you can do is to just keep an eye on them. Make sure their symptoms are subsiding or at least not getting worse. If they are, it’s time to consider taking them back to the doctor.

5. Offer to be their personal assistant and chauffeur

You know how you feel when you’re sick. You feel awful and like the world is just crumbling down around you. Take the weight off your SO’s shoulders and offer to do everything for them. This includes getting anything for them they may ask for and driving them anywhere they may need to go. No complaining allowed!

6. Be there for them

Make sure to keep your distance and to constantly wash your hands, but try to be there for your SO. You spend all your time together normally, but being there for them when they’re sick is even more important.

7. Make them homemade soup

Ah, the stereotypical homemade remedy. Nothing else goes down as easily as warm soup when you feel like absolute crap. What better soup to give your SO than something fresh and made from the heart?

8. Help keep their mind off being sick

The last thing you want your SO to do is to dwell on the fact that they’re sick. This could stunt recovery by stressing them out even more than they already are. Encourage them to do activities they can do from the comfort of their bed to help keep their mind off their sickness.

9. Get them whatever they’re craving

Sometimes when you’re sick, almost nothing sounds good to eat. When your SO gets a certain craving make sure to go out and get it for them! Not only will it ensure that they eat something but it’ll also help to make them feel a little bit better.

10. Let them know there’s nowhere else you’d rather be

It’s easy to feel like you’re a burden when someone is taking care of you. Make sure to let your SO know that you love them and there’s nowhere else you’d rather be. You want to be there for them through thick and thin and you know they would do the same for you.
