We Have a Problem

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

We’ve all been there, it’s all happened before. There is a part in all of us that will make us do something really stupid. There’s a huge paper coming up, finals are around the corner, there’s a project you have to present next week… but when will you be preparing for these assignments? If you were being honest, you will probably admit that these major grade-determining requirements will not be done until the night before they’re due. I do it too, and very well. I will try to convince myself that I can put off an essay by doing something else that’s apparently crucial to my well-being, like dusting, vacuuming, and organizing my entire dorm top to bottom.  Yes, I myself procrastinate so hard that in order to put off this article, I did two loads of laundry, cleaned my microwave, and took out the trash. So, why do we let this nasty habit plague us and jeopardize our schooling? Because there will always be something better than your homework, until the night before it can change your grade. So, here are my five reasons to kick the habit.

 1. Netflix

It’s a guilty pleasure. There’s always that one TV show we all would love to just relax and watch for a few hours but if you’re doing that instead of work it turns into a guilty little pleasure. The whole time you’re enjoying your episode of Breaking Bad, I’m looking at you, roomie, you are constantly thinking of how you should be doing your 5 pager due next week. If you spent that time doing your paper, you would finish it a whole week ahead and be able to watch your guilty pleasure shows in peace. Imagine how fun it would be to watch as many Walter White infused dramas as you want, knowing there is no reason to stop you – your paper is already done.

2. Bragging rights

My roommate finished her last engineering lab a whole week early and that chick has been walking around, bragging to her fellow Pratt stars about it all week. Now, doing the lab was a pain in the butt but since she’s finished it early, not only does she not have to worry about it, but she can also rub it everyone else’s faces. It’s pretty fun.

3. Better Grades

So, this one’s kind of self-explanatory. The earlier you get something done, the longer you have to review it, refine it, and make it even better before you have to turn it in. This increases your chance of getting a better grade and who doesn’t want that?

4. A Head Start

If you get one assignment done earlier, you have more time to start on your next one, and this will get you far ahead in the long run. A head start is great because it helps you prepare for all the big projects, papers, and exams that pile up at the end of the year.

5. A less stressful life

When your assignments get done you have less to worry about and then you won’t be as stressed. And less stress is good for your life, all around. Stress has nasty side effects that are definitely worth avoiding!

There you have it! There are just a few of the many reasons for you to stop procrastinating, get off the internet and start whatever assignment you’re avoiding!
