National November Writing Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

How many times have you exclaimed to your friends: “MY LIFE SHOULD BE A NOVEL!”  Well, here’s your chance.

There’s a great story inside of all of us. All it takes is a little motivation to put it into words. That motivation is available to all of us in the form of National November Writing Month, more commonly known as NaNoWriMo.

Thirty days. 50,000 words. 175 pages. Your chance to write your own epic novel.

NaNoWriMo emphasizes output, not so much the quality of writing. Just get all of your thoughts written down somewhere and worry about the editing process later.

Here’s what NaNoWriMo has to say about why you should participate: “The reasons are endless! To actively participate in one of our era’s most enchanting art forms! To give yourself permission to write without obsessing over quality. To be able to make obscure references to passages from our novels at parties. To stop being one of those people who say, “I’ve always wanted to write a novel,” and become one of those people who can say, “Oh, a novel? It’s such a funny story–I’ve written three.”

And if those weren’t enough reasons to start today, think about just a few of the great novels that started during NaNoWriMo:

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
Losing Faith by Denise Jaden
Persistence of Memory by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes

Over 200,000 people participated in last year’s NaNoWriMo and over 37,000 of them finished their 50,000-page novel. Yours could be next! What’s stopping you? Sign up today at http://nanowrimo.org/

Sabrina is a Junior at Duke University, and is double majoring in English and Public Policy. A born and bred South African, Sabrina has traveled to the USA to pursue her higher education. As well as being a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Sabrina is also Assistant Vice President for Recruitment for the Panhellenic Association at Duke. Sabrina has written for Duke's daily newspaper, The Chronicle and Duke's fashion magazine, FORM. After graduating, she hopes to attend law school preferably in her favourite city, New York. In her spare time, Sabrina vegges out to various fashion blogs, mindless TV (Pretty Little Liars anyone?) and online shopping (which borders on an addiction). If you manage to catch her in an energetic mood, she's probably on her way to cardiodance (or to the nearest mall).
