10 Best Chick Flicks of This Decade

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

1.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days:
My personal favorite, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days tells the love story of Andie Anderson and Benjamin Barry (love the alliteration).  Starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, this flick is filled with humor, romance, and even some pointers for your own love life! The best part- one passionate scene features McConaughey wearing a DUKE shirt!  Could it really get any better than that?!

2. The Wedding Planner: Another movie starring Matthew McConaughey (can you tell I have a slight obsession?), The Wedding Planner tells the story of Mary Fiore’s quest for love (played by J. Lo!).  Unfortunately, soon after meeting her prince charming, Mary learns that she has been hired to be the wedding planner for his wedding.  This hilarious film is filled with plot twists, comedy, and M&Ms (only eat the brown ones, they have less artificial flavoring).

3. The Holiday:
The perfect movie for this time of year, The Holiday stars Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, and Jude Law (who I think comes in a close second to Matthew McConaughey).  The film tells a touching and adorable story of two heartbroken women searching for love in far-away places.

4. Wedding Crashers: Probably the funniest flick I have ever seen, Wedding Crashers will keep you laughing throughout the entire movie.  Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are an unbeatable duo.  This film appeals to men as well, so it’s the perfect date night movie!

5. The Proposal: Not much needs to be said about this chick flick, except for the fact that Ryan Reynolds is shirtless in it (several times).  The Proposal tells the hilarious and unexpected love story of Margaret Tate (played by Sandra Bullock) and Andrew Paxton (played by Reynolds).

6. The Devil Wears Prada:  Fashion and love all in one movie- it doesn’t get much better than that!  Anne Hathaway plays Andy Sachs, a young woman searching for her true calling in New York City.  Watch her story unfold as she struggles to maintain her new and exciting career while balancing her love life.  Maybe you can even get your guy to watch this one (make the argument that it stars Entourage’s Adrian Grenier, that has to count for something, right?).

7. 13 Going on 30: This movie can bring out the 13-year-old in all of us.  Remember those days we used to spend dreaming of our happily ever after?  Remember that boy that you used to think had “cooties” and now has grown into a charming, handsome gentleman?  This rom-com tells the story of Jenna Rink (played by the adorable Jennifer Garner) and her budding relationship with an old childhood friend.

8. The Notebook:  One of the most-acclaimed romance films of all time, The Notebook tells the dramatic and powerful love story of a couple yearning to be together despite the disapproval of their families.  Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams are brilliant in this passionate and inspiring film.  As they say in One Tree Hill, you definitely have to “Notebook” your guy at some point in your relationship to show him the proper way to woo you (okay, maybe building a house is a bit extreme, but a girl can dream…)

9. Love Actually: This tale follows the love lives of eight different couples, all facing very different romantic situations.  Another great holiday film, Love Actually is adorable, moving, and filled with very beautiful people.

10. Mean Girls:  Definitely one of my favorites, Mean Girls is absolutely hilarious.  Another perfect date night movie, Mean Girls tells the story of Cady Heron, a young woman new to high school who is desperately trying to fit in.  As a special treat, I have shared my favorite scene from this flick below (a perfect thing to get you in the holiday spirit!).  You go Glen Coco!
